- Fat (high)
- Sodium (high)
- Nitrites — nitrites in hot dogs probably don't cause cancer.
- Heterocyclic amines (HCA) — Because hot dogs are produced at a lower temperatures compared to other processed meats (e.g. chicken), it has relatively low carcinogenic HCA amounts.
Despite having relatively low HCA amounts, hot dogs are seen seen as unhealthy despite their arguably modest levels of fat and not really exploding in serving sizes. This is thanks to American Institute for Cancer Research's "attack ads" on hot dogs.
