Advice on setting up a satellite rally[edit]

Source, Stacey Hopkins of Atlanta

<snip> it's really not that hard to do. Don't get intimidated and just relax, we're not going to be graded on this or anything!

You can do something outside, but you might want to check with your city or county for event permits and there's often a cost and requirements involved. Too much hassle and you might have to cough up some cash.

Before you contemplate doing an inside event, you may want to invest in your liquor of choice and a large bottle of Tylenol PM...just kidding! Here's some hints that might help some find thier sea legs until the calvary arrives. If it doesn't, we can so do this thing ourselves and I bet you I'll be just fine.

1) Set up your Facebook RTRS satellite city/state page. Try to give it some intve the page some interest and make sure to provide links to the main RTRS website (www.rallytorestoresanity.com), the Facebook page and the Twitter feed (#Rally4Sanity). You might want to throw in the Cafe Press site for merchandise (http://www.cafepress.com/TheRallyToRestoreSanity) and cut and save some of the images for participants to use for posters and to print yourself to decorate the venue. Send the page to your Facebook circle, email contacts, etc. to help raise awareness.

2) Find a venue (bar, restaurant, community center, etc.) that has TV with cable/satellite that carries Comedy Central, if possible. Some places may require a minimum food/beverage purchase or a fee, so make sure you ask before booking; request seperate checks. The time of the national event is from 12 - 3 pm; not sure if it's going to be live-streamed from the CC website, but I'm sure details will come soon or we can make the suggestion on the main RTRS Facebook page. Don't panic if the time isn't available at your venue, the goal is to have fun and not to stress out. As for room size you'll need, I'd go with 50 - 75 in the larger cities; 20 - 30 for the smaller ones. This is the tricky part and you'll have to state the room capacity in your event listing and keep an eye on RSVP's.

3) Once you've set the location and time, create an event on your RTRS satellite Facebook page and send it to your Facebook circle, friends, family, co-workers, organizations you may be affiliated with, etc. After one week after posting your event, check your numbers and make any adjustments. Double-check two weeks out and again the week of. If your event shows signs of being large early on, you may want to get volunteers to host in another venue, if you can't get a room to handle the larger capacity.

4) Solicit for volunteers to help print flyers, post content on the page, moderate the Facebook page for the inevitable trolls and sockpuppets; encourage attendees to make signs and post videos on what they see as insanity in our current political environment and what they'd like to see or consider as civility. If you have some spare change, go to the Dollar Store for posterboard (2 for $1) and sign-making supplies for folks to make their own at the event. Old magazines, craft supplies, etc. are also good for those who are creatively challenged.

I hope this helps and I'm not trying to be presumptious, but I know how daunting this may seem to some and just want to help. I do this as a Coordinator for the Atlanta Coffee Party group and just passing some of what I've learned along.

Remember, just relax and don't sweat the small stuff -- it'll be a blast!
