Talk:Celtic religion
THE Celtic religion?[edit]
Seeing as the Celtic-speaking people were spread over some pretty wide geography over a pretty long period of time, from what is now Turkey to Eire, is it really possible to talk about their religious beliefs as a "thing"? Or is this article meant to be about what we moderns have constructed as a Celtic religion?P-Foster (talk) 17:58, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- This is pretty horrid article. There is no refernce to what this religion is - it seems very new age, and, oh yah, ^^^^ what P-Foster said. --

- PS, since there is no celtic religion, can we please dump this?--

- PPS, i've removed the parts of this article that had nothing to do with the Celtic religions, but were rather someone's fantasy of what ancient Gaul was like. It's much improved now. --

- Wikipedia seems to have a number of articles which seem to deal with the idea of "Celtic religion" as a whole. For example Celtic polytheism, Celtic tree worship, Celtic nature worship, but I claim absolutely no expertise in this area.--BobSpring is sprung! 07:57, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- Perhaps we could rename it "Celtic religions"? Seems preferable to deleting it outright, by Toutatis. Balaam (talk) 08:49, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- Actually, having read some of the WP stuff I'm not sure that there is an awful lot that could be said about it from an RW POV. Perhaps "Celtic Neopaganism" would indeed be a better subject.--BobSpring is sprung! 08:58, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- I thought about "celtic religions", but i was too snarky last night. All the crap about "massive human sacrifice", and "transformation", and generic gods. This is a culture that lived for 1000 years, and spaned from Ireland to France to Germany, and *maybe* into the Czec areas. There were a few overarching ideas, such as clear animism and the (worship?) of trees. But each areas developed their own mythic system, and each had their own sets of specific rituals. But given how much of these "religions" are teh "basic" (gack and ack) of neo paganism, you're right we should have something.

- I pulled the delete, cause the new changes alone give us something to work from. Though I'd agree that we should still move it to "religons" plural, as there were quite a few of them.

- I think we should forget the historical stuff entirely and concentrate on the present-day woo. If we do go with historic then we'd only want whatever is necessary to contrast with the present-day beliefs. I'd be inclined to rename it for clarity to "Celtic Neopaganism".--BobSpring is sprung! 12:38, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

From another angle[edit]
OK, so how about an article about how much "new age" bollocks is hung on "The Celtic Religion" when, in fact, there isn't such a thing. I mean, all those nutters wearing white robes while they insist that worshipping the sunrise at Stonehenge is their ancestral right. It's as fake as all the noble savage crap hung on the American Indians. Bad Faith (talk) 09:08, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
- Oops - that looks like what Bob said just above. RTFA, Faith. Bad Faith (talk) 09:09, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Some gold mine sources[edit]
I haven't read these yet, but here you go.
- learn to be a druid
- http://www.aoda.org/ the traditional druids of the Americas! yeah.
- http://www.adf.org/core/ not quite as promising for debunking, but there is some pretty galish (Celtic or Gallic) of one form or another. — Unsigned, by: WaitingforGodot / talk / contribs 13:56, 25 October 2011 (UTC)
Errors[edit]
Quite a few in here... the notion that women never played a role is questionable. Also there is at least one Celtic writing system: ogham. Druids are also described outwith Greek and Roman sources.-Albannach (talk) 22:43, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
