RationalWiki's 2019 Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff – we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

If everyone who saw this today donated $5, we would meet our goal for 2019.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.
We are 100% user-supported! Help and donate $5, $20 or whatever you can today with PayPal Logo.png!

Redirects?[edit]

Think we need some redirects for the various spellings that will occur (math, maths, Math)? --Irrational Atheist (talk) 20:30, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

The problem with low probabilities[edit]

... is in persuading people that 'such things do happen' (and the cumulative probability of 'one or several of many low probability events' may be quite high - eg meeting someone you know/have talked to recently in an unexpected place at least once in your lifetime).

Creationist maths should be distinguished from creative maths ('cooking the books' and similar). 82.44.143.26 (talk) 15:03, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

The article you're looking for might be "Improbable things happen". Reverend Black Percy (talk) 15:13, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
One element perhaps - and eg 'knowing people with birthdays on several successive days' (one knows logically that 'of one's X hundred friends and acquaintances' there are likely to be some patterns, but it still seems odd when it occurs). It may well be a quirk of human nature - some 'low odds' are accepted (on occasion all the various bits of public transport will align and you end up an hour early, rather than the expected catch some, miss some and be the right number of minutes early)/luck of the draw; and those which #seem# too low to be plausible and pareidolia starts interfering.

What would the best books to be cooked be? 82.44.143.26 (talk) 17:44, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
