Tone down the snark and get rid of the random shit.[edit]

I don't get it. This is for NEW USERS, who probably don't understand snark and who may not be wiki-versed enough to understand that they are getting a random message. They probably don't even know what autopatrolled means.

Please, limit the snark (if any at all) and make it accessible to new people. Sterile (talk) 14:02, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

But I waaaaanna snaaaaark
I'll readd the link to the sysop guide tho. FuzzyCatPotato!™ (talk/stalk) 14:11, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Or alternatively, move it to your userspace to make it clear that it's yours (userspace sub-pages can be used in the same way as templates).--ZooGuard (talk) 14:30, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
This version is fine. FuzzyCatPotato!™ (talk/stalk) 14:34, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Please move this to your user subspace. No one uses this but you. It's still obnoxious with the "general lack of insanity" snark. Sterile (talk) 13:01, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
As a connoisseur of boilerplate, I find this shallow and pedantic lacking in that certain je ne sais quoi that makes a text fit to preserve for ages yet to come. Future generations will not marvel at its wit. Furthermore, informing newbs that they have been "granted" autopatrolled status is an offensive mix of officiousness, wtf, and flapdoodle. Newbs will not see the ! anyway, so it's just rubbing their faces in their lack of a standard-issue mop & bucket. Why bother? MaillardFillmore (talk) 14:41, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
Then improve its humor?
The autopatrolled version of the template exists b/c a few people that I autopatrolled asked me what it is, and explaining is way too hard. Mʀ. Wʜɪsᴋᴇʀs, Esϙᴜɪʀᴇ (talk/stalk) 17:11, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
RationalWiki:Autopatrolled is too opaque to explain anything to someone not already familiar with RW's ways. Seriously, has anyone asked you about it without you first telling them that you had autopatrolled them? MaillardFillmore (talk) 18:39, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

GoodGopher[edit]

Does duckduckgo filter crank sites? If not, I would prefer giving them views vs giving Mike Adams views. FuzzyCatPotato!™ (talk/stalk) 05:45, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Yes it does.Wikipedia I did searches on abiotic oil and only got one crank website. —Hamburguesa con queso con un cara Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 15:24, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
Re: this edit
@Christopher: Why not? It's a useful tool to find crank websites that are otherwise filtered from search engines.—Hamburguesa con queso con un cara Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 16:24, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
More importantly: RationalWiki doesn't sufficiently cover the bullshit available on the non-Gopher web. Given that, should we be encouraging new users to find new cranks who [1] are so small that they aren't on Google and [2] won't have much material on Google debunking them?
Or: We haven't even mopped the school cafeteria yet. Should we be encouraging new janitors to start work on the bathrooms? FᴜᴢᴢʏCᴀᴛPᴏᴛᴀᴛᴏ, Esϙᴜɪʀᴇ (talk/stalk) 17:13, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
A little ironic that you wrote for the essay Essay:Why notability is stupid and I hate it and are arguing this.—Hamburguesa con queso con un cara Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 17:27, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

FWIW whenever I search for marginal crank stuff, DDG will give me at least a few openly neonazi sites. In my case I consider it somewhat of a plus to not be insulated from them (because DDG doesn't target search results like Google does), but at the same time they probably shouldn't be getting even as much search precedence as they do. —ThisIsMyRealName (talk) 03:16, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Rbutr Appears to be Dead[edit]

Or at least dying. Most pages on the website time out, and the Firefox Add-On results in a Firefox popup with the following error: "The add-on downloaded from this site could not be installed because it appears to be corrupt." I looked at the founder's Twitter, and someone asked about Rbutr not working back in October 2019; this is the tenth most recent tweet with the word "rbutr" in it, and the official Rbutr Twitter account hasn't tweeted since early 2019. It seems like a useful tool, and the Rbutr website still shows more recent rebuttals, but it may not be the best recommendation for new users if it isn't actually possible to install it, at least on Firefox, anymore. At the very least maybe someone who uses Twitter can poke the founder again? —ThisIsMyRealName (talk) 22:47, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
