Re: accusing someone of being Trent[edit]

Please don't, it's borderline doxxing even if intended as a joke (unless it's really obvious). Christopher (talk) 20:11, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Doxxing my ass, Trent announced his affiliation with McMaster's University on-wiki. McMaster's is the ISP that BoN is registered to, and if you are seriously saying that we can't post the ISP information, when BoN editors are warned "You are not logged in. Your IP address will be recorded in this page's edit history, and will be visible to anyone. To protect your privacy, please log in or create an account." in the cat banner, that's ridiculous. It was a question of curiosity, and the BoN can choose to answer truthfully, lie, or not answer the question as all, dumbass. 172.58.15.12 (talk) 20:42, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Look, that information is publicly available somewhere, and can be combined with other semi-public information to assemble what might be considered more private information than someone wants to disclose is pretty much the definition of doxxing. "All I did was do a whois on this IP and attempt to assign a name to it" is probably a hair too far. Please don't do it without reason. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 20:46, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Posting a picture of my ex-girlfriend's vagina on Facebook along with her phone number and address is doxxing. *REFERENCING* WHOIS information is not. Someone would have still had to look up the dox if they wanted to get to the bottom of what I posted. 172.58.15.12 (talk) 20:55, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
No, really, most of the worst doxxing in internet history comes from combining publicly available information sources through effort and really, what purpose is served trying to find details on the identity of an individual on an internet community other than harassment? We're definitely more of a "spirit of the law" community than a "letter of the law" community, here. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 21:05, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Then people dox each other all the time around here, because I've had past IPs "doxxed". ISPs mentioned, locations mentioned, links to off-wiki activity mentioned... I've been around here for a while and used to be a sysop. Then I went and deleted a bunch of articles because I was bored. 172.58.15.12 (talk) 21:07, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Everyone here is a sysmop. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 21:09, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
Unless you're a. a BoN, b. new, or c. sysoprevoked (me) 172.58.15.12 (talk) 21:10, 14 June 2017 (UTC) I am, however, a sysop on a more important wiki under a completely different name than I used here. 172.58.15.12 (talk) 21:12, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

This is a waste of everyone involved's time. @BON, what does it matter? @Ikanreed: Trent's info is very easily available, IMO -- hard to dox him. Fuzzy. Cat. Potato! (talk/stalk) 21:12, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Fuzzy has brains. The other people around here, not so much. Christopher USED to be sensible, but the fascism is rubbing off on him. 172.58.15.12 (talk) 21:16, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
It may not be Doxxing Trent but it's doxxing the BoN who he calls Trent. Christopher (talk) 21:23, 14 June 2017 (UTC)
