Westboro in all its glory
Check out "Keith Allen is going to Hell" on youtube. Its about the Westboro Baptist Church. I like Keith Allen cause he appears to be a chain smoking alcoholic like us. Rad McCool 09:48, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Beer
So I just bottled up my 5 gallon batch of european lager (using proper lager yeast) and something odd happened. I ran out of my nice bottles. This is most strange because I have 45 of said bottles and I usually only get 42-ish bottles per batch. In my haste I quickly rinsed and sterilised a bombadier bottle and filled and capped it. While cleaning up I noticed that I did actually have 3 more of my nice bottles which I had somehow missed (this problem may have been alcohol related).
So anyway, I'm looking at my nice collection of beer bottles (see figure 1) and the odd, slightly retarded bottle at the side (see figure 1) and thought "ah well, I'll give that to someone", and for some reason thought of you. I have no idea how much postage of said bottle would be from teh UK to NZ but if it's only a few quid then I'd happily pick up the tab to allow you to try some of my uberbeer, being such a booze expert as thou art. You wants? CrundyTalk nerdy to me 23:14, 3 October 2009 (UTC)
This won't be ready in time for the Midwest Meetup, but I'll post a sixer to whomever when it is. I also have a lager that's well ready to bottle. 23:33, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

I just ordered me some Lalvin ICV-D47 for some winemaking. - Yo my yeast is flocculent because that's how I roll, g. That carboy is an experiment in making a lighter and lower gravity blond ale by adding 20% wheat and using Wyeast Kolsch yeast. My last batch of regular blond ale using the same yeast was a success so I have high hopes for this experiment. 13:37, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Oooh, Kolsch. I got hooked on that stuff when I visited my friend in Bonn. So which exact yeast is it? The only lager yeast I've used is Saflager S-23. CrundyTalk nerdy to me 15:36, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- It's an ale yeast, not a proper lager yeast, although making a traditional Kolsch, which the ale I made is not, has you treating it as a bit of a hybrid: after the primary fermentation at regular ale temps you shock the beer for a few weeks at lager temps, which helps it clarify. I think the yeast I used for that blonde ale was Wyeast 2565. I hope it will end up with some bright citrus flavors. 15:52, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Just bottled up 1 gal of my red (well, rose) supermarket grape juice wine. It's a bit fruity and tart at the moment, so I'm going to have to sit there staring at it for a couple of months :(
- Actually I just realised, Ace, my house is like some kind of McWicked utopia at the moment. I have 42 bottles of european lager, a primary full of 5 gallons of australian lager, 4 bottles left of peach chablis, 5 bottles of rose, and a gallon of white homebrew all lying around, as well as the obvious "inbetween" store bought beer and wine to keep me going while I wait. I have a couple cases of wine laying around but in Ace's house alcohol doesn't keep. What I have gets drunk non-stop until its gone. Then I have to go out and buy more. I have to shop for alcohol daily. AceMcWicked 21:26, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, all this "waiting for booze" is killing me! CrundyTalk nerdy to me 21:54, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- You need to hook up with like-minded pals and make beer with them all winter so you have case upon case for the summer. I've been way behind this year and I still have perhaps 3 cases of various drinkable homebrews waiting for those rare moments when I can't stagger far enough to get to the liquor store. Got 5 gallons of that kolsch/ale in the secondary. The gear and ingredients are cheap once you have the basics and you can make the rest. We use 6 gallon glass carboys we get used on craigslist, laboratory tubing and fittings from my friend's former lab, and superfresh ingredients from our local homebrew store so we can make all-grain recipes without wondering how long that stuff sat on the internet retailer's shelf. You can make a sparger out of used commercial cookwear from the restaurant supply shop and stuff from the home center. We lager in a modified mini-frig we found in the alley. 00:35, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

- How are you adding your priming sugar before bottling? Beautiful color for an ale, btw! Grats on the clarity and straw color. 14:20, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- It's actually a lager, not an ale. I dissolve dextrose in hot water and then add this to my bottling bucket before racking from my conditioning barrel into the bottling bucket, and then bottling. I prefer this to adding half a teaspoon per bottle, as bulk priming tends to be a bit more predictable. Trouble is, I found that using 125g sugar left me with pretty flat beer, so I used a calculator and added about 180g instead, which I did think was a bit too much. I'll use about 150g next time.
