Hi MNO. I noticed that you left a post in the What is going on in the World forum. I'm curious why you deleted it. It's an interesting topic and it may be (possibly) the case that someone will have something interesting to say. I can tell you that when I lived in London I had many friends who were temporary teachers (British, Australian, NZ, Canadians) and they in general had a pretty hard time of it, but then, it was London and as temporary workers happy to get work, they were sent to shitty schools with disciplinary problems. Some had it much worse than others. In one school my friend was insulted multiple times during every class and was threatened and the principle refused to come to the class to escort a student out of the school just because he told her "to fuck off" or "suck my dick". Apparantly it was so common (and by the way this was 15 years ago) that there was much worse they had to deal with. Other friends of mine had relatively pleasant experiences. I also lived in Cheltenham some time and a friend of mine there was a teacher and said they didn't have any problems remotely like my friends in London faced. Can't say anything about minority students because all my friends talked about was discipline and activities and I've never set foot in a British school. I've also read about some pretty terrible schools with lots of violence against teachers. I've also read about really great places. Some of my friends were jaded, they said "don't go into teaching...you'll never make a difference" while others encouraged it. In the end I didn't do it. I have no patience for snotty kids and ZERO patience for stupid parents. It at least seems that there are schools out there where you might be able to make a difference.
