ps, forgive any errors in style, but dang it, this is *my* gosh darn page, and how's a liberal, overly educated (and in a liberal school mind you) pro-abort gal supposed to learn when you all hit her page after a mere 2.248934 seconds (or 12 seconds, if you use CP math!)

HEY! You're a GAL? Welcome. Welcome. Welcome! SusanG  ContribsTalk 13:06, 3 July 2008 (EDT)
I take it from your response, there aren't that many Rationalwikiers who have "girly parts"?--WaitingforGodot 13:35, 3 July 2008 (EDT)
True, you could probably count them on the fingers of one person. Nice to have company. :-) SusanG  ContribsTalk 13:40, 3 July 2008 (EDT)

Tip[edit]

I saw your post on Human's talk page about accidentally deleting something and not knowing what it was. If you click on the "fossil record" (other wikis probably have "history") tab you get a listing of all the edits made to a page. This shows who made an edit and when. On the left hand side are two blue links to "cur" and "last". The "cur" link shows all the changes made to an article between that edit and the current version. The "last" link just shows the the changes to the article made by that one edit. This is normally known as a "diff" and you can move backwards and forwards through an article showing the changes that each editor makes by clicking the "diff" link at the top of the page when viewing an older version of the page. The diffs have a unique edit number which you can see in the address bar, so that when we add something to WIGO we use the diff copied from the address bar as the link in WIGO. One final point, every version of a page had a unique number. If you need to refer to the current version of a page which might get changed then on the left hand side of the RationalWiki below the Search box is a toolbox where you can find "Permanent link", this will load the address bar with the "oldid" of the page.

Hope I'm not being too basic but I know it takes a while to fins ones way round all the options here. Jollyfish.gifGenghisIs the Pope a Catholic? 04:14, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

Ah, ok. For me, it's about organization. After i am hinted where to look, i find most things, but "misc" and "specific" links just don't help me understand what I'm trying to do and where to look. I feel as if teh "easy/welcome/first timer" stuff is mixed with teh "so you want to be a baby editor" stuff, with teh "ok, now you've really done it and started to really edit" stuff. I discounted the "how to get around wiki" section, for example, cause i figured it was self explanatory, and low and behold, there's good juicy stuff in there! I loved teh "uber cool" section, by the way! that was logical and everything in it is what i wanted to know about. I'm not helping, right now, susan, cause i'm about 2 sheets to the wind (have 3 to go), but I'll be more coherant tomorrow or sunday! :-) By the way, "why are you editing when you are 2 sheets to teh wind", cause the other option is the stack of dishes i made my husband do. :-D--WaitingforGodot 21:08, 25 July 2008 (EDT)

Dear God, (or may I call you Eric ?['cause whoever heard of a God called Simon?])

It's just that I can't figure out what I'm supposed to do if I want to talk to someone. Do I go to their talk page or to their user page?

I understood that the practice was to post on someone elses talk page and they would reply on their user page. However, your reply to my earlier message appear on my user page. Now I've no problem with that whatsoever that but assuming I want to have further conversations with the nice people here, I don't want go round accidently offending them and end up being banned from this establishment just yet. If you could be so kind as to help me out in this matter of manners and chivalry, I promise to sacrifice a goat in your honour.

Intercom[edit]

Intercom came about because many people don't pay attention to particular talk pages, and there is no real central location to deliver messages to site users or groups of users. This allows those interested in a topic to "subscribe" to a single place to send out messages. It can be used to refer people to talk pages where an important discussion is taking place, or if the message is short just deliver it through the intercom. tmtoulouse heckle 15:16, 8 September 2008 (EDT)

No... you know, "preview" works well for this - open a few tabs, one with each piece of the sig, and one with an attempt to use it. Then get a medium-small hammer (I suggest about 14 oz in medieval units) and start hitting everything within reach until your sig works exactly as you want. Esperanto[edit]

Salut et bienvenu. Je 'comprend pas le but d'esperanto, mais j'aime les langues donc, ca me toujours trouve bien - si je comprend ou pas. Your papa translated Hugo & Eugene Ianesco (sp) into esperanto? That's quite a task. Tu as dit que tu parles esperanto de ton naissance? comment ca? (pardon the spelling. others will attest that my English sucks, much less my french).

Thanks for your welcoming !
Aim of Esperanto is to provide a way for people from different countries of different languages to understand each other. Esperanto is easier to learn than any ethnic language. Choosing Esperanto makes people stand on a equal foot (level ?). Choosing any ethnic language put natives in superior position. You can read more about Esperanto on the web. You'll find lot of informations.
Yes my father translated these two works (œuvres) and many others. He translated several theater pieces (scripts?) that have been performed in Esperanto. He also wrote original novels (thrillers) in Esperanto. I'm about to publish his last one.
My parents met together with Esperanto (my mother is born German). Esperanto was for them a whole love story and they chose to speak in Esperanto at home : so my brothers and I naturally learned to speak in French and in Esperanto simultaneously.
Category[edit]

I saw you using Category:Fundamentalist Christians, and I just wanted you to know that I'll be merging it with Category:Fundamentalists—there's so much overlap between them that one of them should go, and it would be better to keep the non-religion-specific one. Ok. I also made an "executive decision" (not that I'm an executive or anything, but it sounded good) to remove from individual pages, any super categories where the more important or specific category is the Sub. For Example, a chemical description of Water would be Category:Chemistry. Chemistry is already a sub cat of Science, so I would remove the listing on the H2O page of "Science". Otherwise, it seemed like we could have 100 cats for each page.--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. I figured. But there is no real discussing of how categories work around here. I banged my head a few times several months ago, just cause the "bun headed, glasseswearing librarian" in me insists that everything has a place. chocolate[edit]

Many years ago (1962) I worked at Thorntons choccy makers as an apprentice chocolatier. (I lasted about 18 months for several reasons, chief among which was that at 5ft 1in & skinny, I couldn't heft the hundredweight sacks of sugar & stuff & the (all male) management & board got pissed off with me. Also I had a stand up fight with the enrobing line chargehand, a woman whom I theoretically outranked, which didn't go down too well.) If you were English you'd know the name of the firm. The crunchy bits in the sweets were possibly cockroaches back then. We used to test temperature by dipping a spatula into the mixer & testing it on the top lip - apparently the most temperature sensitive part of the available anatomy. Interestingly, back then Thorntons chock was in fact blended Cadburys as they were the only importers in the UK· As advertised you were allowed to eat as much as you wanted at work & everyone was fairly sick of the stuff after their first fortnight there. Talk about a dream job? Well it was experience.

I'd always taken short cuts, stuff you see in the mags to temper with "seeding", or to temper by hyper cooling.... and they worked "ok", but i tried to just do it the old fashion way. Took close to an hour the first time, to temper 3 lbs, but man were the results better than i expected. Thanks, and yeah... Dream Job in some ways. though like you said, hard as hell work.

Beckett Nabokov Lolita Godot[edit]

You know, you've managed to not only include two of my favourite authors in your sig quotes, but two of my favourite books (and now I'm not the only one with Nabokov in my sig!). --Purple George!YossieSpring in Fialta 21:40, 5 March 2009 (EST)

I think my single favorite line in writing, is "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita. Did she have a precursor? She did, indeed she did. In point of fact, there might have been no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, an initial girl-child. In a princedom by the sea. Oh when? About as many years before Lolita was born as my age was that summer. You can always count on a murderer for fancy prose style. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns. "

It just oozes with the physical sensuality that is saying words. You can't say it in your head, or just read it, you have to say it outloud, and feel that tongue play inside of your mouth. Yeah, Nabakov just makes me quiver. I've tried him in russian, for the hell of it, but let's be clear... my russian is about as good as any off the street person using "bablefish". :D. --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. V.Nabokov» 09:51, 6 March 2009 (EST)

I used to know that passage word for word (and recited it! An actor like me could ask for no better writer to just speak than VVN). :) Part of why I love Nabokov so much is because he loves words. Hell, he loves every single sound on the page, let alone the words. That and his sense of dark, dark humour. I think I've read Lolita three times, and every time I've discovered something new. It's just that rich. It might be time I picked it up again, but I've got about eight reams of paper to produce for school by the end of the month. --Purple George!YossieSpring in Fialta 22:34, 6 March 2009 (EST)
Gawd, Lolita was an English as a fifth (?) language speaker making love to the language, and to the magnificent panorama that is the North American continent. Oh, and he added a thing about sex so it would sell. My favorite line: "February fooled the forsythia" (in CT). He knew his subject that well. ħumanUser talk:Human (later that evening)
What drives me crazy about Nabokov is that he had this inferiority complex about his English. He felt that his was second rate. Putting aside from the fact that that's INSANE (or false modesty), he could read and write English before he could Russian. He learned French, English, and Russian concurrently from a young age, and his accent was somewhere between all three. But it wasn't really his first language in a cultural sense, so it's still remarkable how sensual and unaffected his writing is. One of my favourite lines from Lolita: "J'ai toujours admiré l'oeuvre du sublime dublinois." --Purple George!YossieSpring in Fialta 03:19, 7 March 2009 (EST)
"making love to the language" -- Great line for it. I don't really read him for topic, cause other than Pale Fire, I'm not really so into anything he writes about. And frankly his writing gets laborious as a completed work at times, precisely cause it's not the theme he cares about, but literally pushing the language's limits (and his own use/understanding of the language). Words blow me away. He and Walt Whitman play around with the literal sounds (as you both said) of the words on teh page... and I drool. But I wanted to be a translator since my second adult hood: (when, in what ever field you went, having done your job for 10 years, you say "I'm bored, i should have done X or Y") but didn't really want to invest the energy to be a translator of quality, so I play at it. both Beckett and Nabokov are masters of translation, academically studying it as an art, and uniquely being able to translate their own works. Nabakov has written of his own translations, that they literally become other books on the tongues of another language, and that he was wrong when he tried to stifle the new work they became as he translated. His son is an academic student of the art of translation as well.
Pale Fire is my favorite "theme" work of Vlads. It makes me giggle to know that he's playing with us the entire time, and fully aware that even today people are doing with Pale Fire what Kinbote did with Shade. You just know he's off someone in Heaven grinning ear to ear watching teh academic game play out. :D--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. V.Nabokov» 11:14, 7 March 2009 (EST)
Pale Fire is so delightfully insane...but it's such a well crafted madness. Beckett and Nabokov's translation work has always fascinated me. Beckett too felt the work was different after he translated it--I read somewhere he that he felt the English Godot was his favourite of his translations. It's interesting that there's that connection between them. People were always puzzled by my affection for both, since their styles are so far apart. But I think it's perfectly alright to love the baroque of Nabokov and the minimalism of Beckett, both at the same time and in equal measures. --Purple George!YossieSpring in Fialta 21:54, 7 March 2009 (EST)

Bible stuff & redlinks[edit]

If it's on the top of wantedpages and in the template, it's more likely to be noticed and written by somebody. If someone's reading a Guide to the Bible article, and stumbles upon a missing article, they might decide to write it. The point of wantedpages is, like its name says, to show wanted pages. We should only remove the ones we don't want. --  Nx/talk  16:32, 12 March 2009 (EDT)

While I understand that, it's been there for a year and 1/2, and they are remarkably small books. I was actually just going to take them out of the template. If someone really had a hankering to write, they'd have done so. They just make it harder to find real things we want to write about. At least that's what I think. There really is less than 1 sentence to say about these books, and at some point, it just doesn't seem to be part of RW's vision for itself.--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. LOL, nope. it was an idea to make bible books "fun and snarky", and also look at them critically. Hey, the linking to WP on the Bible stuff really is ugly. Red links are better, IMHO. WP links kill the "impetus" to ever write something, since the links are blue. Maybe you can't think of something to write on a given book (and I know you wrote many), but that doesn't mean someone else won't. Please leave the links as set up to RW articles. I know that due to the template, they are "high" on the "wanted articles" list, but that is not a good reason to kill the links. ħumanUser talk:Human 23:53, 14 March 2009 (EDT)
I'll leave it alone, I just fully disagree that those articles would add anything anyhow. Like I said, to me there is a point where it becomes antithetical to RWs focus to have something too indepth. But if squirell wants to do such a good job goating them (and he's doing a great job, really), I'll fully stay out of it. sorry to rant on your page by the way.--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Just because you can't goat them up, doesn't mean someone won't, someday. But if all the links get WPed, no one will ever see them as "wanted pages". Now, I also understand the issue with them being listed 49 (was it 49?) times, due to the template, but it's not hard to see why they are there and skip to the "next" wanted article. I'm sorry if I seemed heavy-handed with the reverting, but a WP link-farm is not our goal to be. PS, the last sig of your I saw said "I don't think in languages, I think in images" - very nice, considering you are one of our multilingual editors. It "sounded" like it was you talking. I know they'll probably be trivial articles, but still. Let's do the whole guide here - then move on the the Qur'an? ħumanUser talk:Human 00:10, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
Like I said, I'm fine with that. I just got a bit annoyed with the whole "lets make lots of lists like Wikipedia, then link all of them" aspect that I kept seeing when starting to de-red. I am always torn, cause I feel like "This is not a fricking encyclopedia", and "well, but is it useful". One of the reasons on the re-link de redding that I go into each article carefully is to ask "what would be the point of this link, how could it be used to further our aim, or is it just to fill a link". If someone links to, say, "Inner Mongolia", then writes a semi shoddy history of Inner Mongolia, it feels strange to me. Worse, if they then make a list of all the cities and provinces and then link them... but don't write them. Anyhow, i'm getting old and cantankerous. I've left them alone for a year, i can leave them alone till someone gets to them. ;-) as for the qu'ran, I'm not sure I've even read the whole thing, but we'll all have to brush up on our Arabic, since it's tradition to post any quote in both the original Arabic and the translation. muwhahahahaa. Now, can we do something about teh CP math article dumps. j/k.--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Hehe, has it really been a year? (yes). Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana... How's your Arabic? Mine's Shite (omigod sorry bad joke forgive me). It really is time we critiqued Islam for it's silliness as well as we have Xtianity. ħumanUser talk:Human 00:24, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
PS, I don't mean any of my comments in this section to diminish the honor of the barnstar that opens it. Congratulations! ħumanUser talk:Human 00:26, 15 March 2009 (EDT)
unindent - 1) I don't find your comments to be anything but a valid point of view that I will accept or not, as is my mood. I don't think they are meant to be personal. My dumping the bible stuff was personal. ;-) As for your shi'ite, cute. :) And I agree with the criticism of Islam. It's a touchy topic, cause how do you keep from going into the American Esque "We don't want obama cause he's got a muslim name" sounding commentary on Islam, while at the same time saying "shit that says it's ok to behead your 6 year old girl for having a **crush** on an American soldier is really bad mojo". I've had a hard time trying to find that middle ground in my writing elsewhere. I know that much of what the US sees is cherry picked (or as Jon Stewart said, turd mined) to prove islam is bad, but ... it can be bad. (god, i have no caps here. i'm worse than Cap Boy who Writes Every other Word in Caps like it's German or Something). --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. I think we can freely criticize Islam, without self-censoring. Hell, we've wrung Xtianity by the neck, why not Islam (and Judaism), especially what is stupid about them - the fundies? ħumanUser talk:Human 03:57, 15 March 2009 (EDT)

Due Process[edit]

I can't edit the intercom for some reason. There's a difference between "procedural due process," which is literally the process which is due in any particular governmental function and implicates notions of fairness in being heard and having an opportunity to respond, etc, and "substantive due process," which implicates some of the personal liberty rights we approve of (rubbers, choice). I'm a lawyer and a lawyer wannabe, but not a constitutional scholar. That said, I will work on cobbling something together after you do the split. CPNuisance 21:13, 19 March 2009 (EDT)

Manga Stuph[edit]

Just posted this on Kels' page, but seeing as you're a fellow otaku (*hide*) I thought I'd add it here. The OP for Moyashimon, with the dancing germs is adorable (and very well done!) Anyway, as promised, here's the link for WotH and Walking Man. Egao was a bit big to upload, but found it here - and in the related videos, there appears to be a couple of interesting things. You have to watch Aquatic Language - and then track down Eve no Jikan (same guys who did Pale Cocoon - another must see). --PsyGremlinWhut? 04:56, 14 April 2009 (EDT)

Am I to gather you're on the East Side now? ToastToastand marmite 17:41, 19 April 2009 (EDT)

LOL, yes. i swear to god (the one i don't believe in) that i have never walked so far in my life. We did 3 long days in Paris, 1 long day in Alsace (St. Pete), and tomorrow probably Versailles. Dag but I found out how bad my french ear is. I can read all the works you want, but actually understanding someone who tells me directions - fuh'ged'a'bout'it. We'll be in "your neck of the woods" late Tuesday night, to spend the next Wednesday playing on castles of Scotland. Course my clock is all wrong, so I'm up till like 3, and want to sleep till noon! ;-)--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Where are you now? ToastToastand marmite 22:58, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Wierd, I somehow managed to "center" my entire page. yippi me. anyhow, just got into colorado last night, and have one last day off to pet cats and clean up the damage they did to my house. Who know two lonely cats could barf that much. I managed to dump water on my laptop, while on the plane to France. After it dried, it's been acting like a cat. it works when it wants to, and doesn't work when it doesn't want to, and feels no obligation to either warn you it's not going to work, or explain why it's not working. whahahahah. ;-) Waved at Kels from "Kels" Ireland, by the way. And found some Stilton cheese, and had a good ol' shot of Scotch in all your honor. ;-) --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Edinburgh[edit]

What did you do there? Wisest time Phantom! 21:39, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Just the touristy things. I was pretty underimpressed. I think we need to rent a car like we did in Ireland, and actually *see* the real country, and not just the castle and the gift stores. We took an "Edinburgh underground" tour that was really silly. She was telling us how the poltergeists would get us, and we were supposed to be hyper scared. "I can't even stand to stay down here alone, too many ghosts and poltergeists, but I'll let any of you who want to, stay". Yeah, so Hubby and I stay, no ghosts, sorry to say. Though I got a splendid bruise and scratch marks from who knows where, which the guide claimed came from the poltergeist.
And having dealt with it for two days, I feel so sorry for the locals who have to live around the new Tram System as it goes up. ripping up your single most central street cannot make life easy.
Did have a Scots brew (not sure which one, we had 4 total) and "Fish and chips' at a pub. Very tasty, very homey, very natural. However, not sure that the rest of the food was worth mentioning. hehehe.--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Off the tourist beat Edinburgh is OK bloody good. My favourite Scottish town of any size has to be Inverness, though. ToastToastand marmite 22:59, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I really wanted to go there. The highlands in general, but Inverness in particular. Most of the history I know of Scotland, is from the Highlands, the waring periods between the Picts (sp?) and the various invasions... Not to mention Nessy - I mean, what's scotland if you can't say you saw a lump/hump/blob that was probably a dinosaur/monster/shadow. Gotta go see all those locs, and feel the wind on your face. See, I'm so *not* a city girl. :-)--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. It was more than disagreeing. Perhaps a shorter block would have been more appropriate, but I still need a rest from his empty rhetoric. I have to give him credit, its sophistry at its finest! Jorge 22:56, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

That was really wrong. To get a rest, walk away or don't go to where he is editing for a bit. ħumanUser talk:Human 02:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Just by the way, it's no good saying he's a sysop & could unblock: it's the fact of the block being over 31 seconds or so that offends. ToastToastand marmite 02:46, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, Human, I feel adequately shamed now. Jorge 02:49, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
One of the things that bugs me about people (all people, myself included) in today's day and age, is that it's easier to deal with things we don't like by limiting their behaviors, and not modifying our own. So, I figured you were frustrated and acted out of that place which we all carry. I just acted like your rational mind. You'd have come to realize that it was too long a block soon enough, I suspect. ;-)--Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. new articles and edit conflicts[edit]

Actually, once something's on the wiki, it's fair game. Anyway, the best way to build something you know you'll need to work on for a bit is in a sandbox, then move it to main when you're mostly done. Or, at least, slap a note at the top saying you're still busy, and don't forget to remove it when you're finished. An intercom message is probably the most useless way to solve the problem, since they are ephemeral. ħumanUser talk:Human 23:57, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

you know what? I don't even care. I'm so tired of the political correctness around here lately. What drew me was that we had a "stand" if you will, on positions. We took cuts on politicians, we were critical of religions, and out right attacked them (as it were) when we could. Now we seem to be trying to sound like a normal encylopedia, with no snark, no challenges to the establishment. If people want articles that read like Wikipedia, good for them. But it's gotten really tedious around here, and not cause CP is on the down slide. Thanks for your comments, and for keeping it real, as it were. --Sun mowse.pngEn attendant Godot"«Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. That's why you left? What? Because you thought we were "politically correct"? Seriously. Professor Moriarty 14:25, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Seems to be confusing "political correctness" with "this is what needs to happen to keep a project working when it gets this big". But if some people don't like that, then it's fine. RW may well be too big now for some peoples tastes. Scarlet A.pngpathetic 14:49, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
