Semester[edit]

Every semester it happens again. Every semester I go into a seething rage. I need to get out of academia. Researcher 20:23, 9 December 2008 (EST)

If it is any consolation, my family has a long. long history of getting out of academia. So . ... what happened? A Prof ripped you off? A student tried to pass of Voltaire as his/her own work? Whole papers copied off wikipedia? Anyway, have a couple of drinks and try and relax out of the unhealthy, unhappy, unpleasant state-of-mind. Carptrash 20:52, 9 December 2008 (EST)
I appreciate the suggestions...I hadn't considered the alcohol route. I'll probably drink some and then play some video games. I'm an adjunct prof, and after a few cases last year (which I put into the article back then), I got really burned out. I tried really hard to reinforce this year that plagiarism was NOT OK. So far, I've had one plagiarism case, the second paper I began to grade. It was several sentences and then the last few paragraphs copied off of a more obscure internet resource. It just pisses me off. Researcher 21:01, 9 December 2008 (EST)
Also, good change to the article. It's plagiarism no matter where it's done. Researcher 21:04, 9 December 2008 (EST)

People....please...[edit]

Every time you plagiarize, you kill your professor's brain cells as s/he chokes back the rage. Please...think of your professor.... Researcher 17:46, 13 December 2008 (EST)

Isn't plagiarism usually grounds for dismissal? And wouldn't that be a more proper outlet for the Professor Rage? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 18:09, 13 December 2008 (EST)
It depends on the school and the severity of the offense. Though I don't even want to consider what I'd have to go through to kick someone out of my college. Two students seemed genuinely shocked that what they did wasn't ok. ("But it was from a blog! That's not an academic source, is it?") One, however, pretty much "wrote" her whole paper by cutting and pasting what other people had said The fourth...I'm not sure, but I get the feeling the paper was bought off the internet. The citations are too bizarre, for one, and the topic did not at all match what they were supposed to write about. If I can prove that, then I might seek to have that student dismissed. Researcher 18:57, 13 December 2008 (EST)
My experience is that freshmen/sophomores will never get dismissed on a first offense. Fail the assignment, maybe have to re-take the course and a letter of reprimand, but that's about as far as I've seen it go...PFoster 19:09, 13 December 2008 (EST)
Have you considered slapping their pee pees? Works better on guys. Carptrash 12:59, 14 December 2008 (EST)
Not only would that get me arrested for assault, and get me fired for sexual misconduct, it's very difficult to do in a distance education class. Researcher 13:20, 14 December 2008 (EST)

The distance thing is a problem for sure. On that other stuff, well if you've never been in a jail, this might be an interesting way to do it. "So, what are you in here for?" Yeah, it would get interesting. Fast Carptrash 13:28, 14 December 2008 (EST)

Yeah, but going to jail for that would kind of put a crimp in some of my future plans. For example, I have hopes of a real job when I finish being an adjunct, and the ones I want look askance at convicted felons. Researcher 13:49, 14 December 2008 (EST)

In science[edit]

Apparently, although I have only anecdotes from some people in the know, outright plagiarism in rife in India and possibly China as they don't even frown on it (although they don't encourage it) at a national level. Although since both countries have been moving into the international circles in recent years, they're starting to crack down on it and do try to kick themselves up the arse about it when publishing or working internationally. It's not unusual for students when they come over to the UK from these places to have little concept of what plagiarism is or why it's bad. Scarlet A.pngmoral 16:58, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Mission[edit]

Oh yes, but the current article... ТyrannisPlead 19:00, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, but we'd be better off with "plagiarism in science" or "academic fraud in science" as an actual article, as that subject has more missionality than just plagiarism as a concept. Scarlet A.pnggnostic 19:03, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Hell, we could probably merge a bunch of stuff over from the Ward Churchill article and it would be substantive...and there's hardly anything there. -- Seth Peck (talk) 19:08, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
