Wow that's expensive! ~ Lumenos (talk) 23:15, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

External backups[edit]

I wonder if RatWikians with high bandwidth could take turns receiving external backups, to remove that expense. ~ Lumenos (talk) 23:15, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

The point of using a professional service for backups is because it guarantees redundancy of that data. Shoving the backup to a private computer that may or may not be available if we need it defeats the whole purpose. Also the data contains the passwords, names and e-mails of RW users so can't just be sent around randomly. And finally, the database is very large, it takes 2-3 days to send it the first time, with subsequent uploads taking less time because of RSYNC and other protocols. These rely on a full back up all ready being present, so you can't really "take turns." tmtoulouse 23:26, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks!
Lumeniki used to be hosted by a wikifarm called ScribbleWiki. One day all wikis became unavailable and eventually they claimed that their backup service failed (they didn't name the service but I think that would have been appropriate). My backup succeeded. Can you access/test the backup or see that it is restorable? ~ Lumenos (talk) 00:50, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Yes, and there are multiple stages of backup, there is a local backup on the server, there is a network backup to a different machine but also in my apartment, and finally there is the on-line, off-site backup that we pay for. The on-line backup has its own backup and redundancy maintained by the company that we pay to host it.
Also we have the rationalwiki:content dumps which is all the content on RW just not the history, user names, and images. tmtoulouse 00:57, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Oooooh Sir, we are not worthy; not worthy of your precious ingenuity, time, and resources. Our wiki is so... oh may as well say it; it's so nerdy, Sir. Nothing can be done at this point, I'm afraid. The hooks of nerdliness are in so deep now. ~ Lumenos (talk) 19:23, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

EvoWiki[edit]

Just wondering if any costs are associated with EvoWiki being a project of the foundation, and if so, what are the projected costs? ThunderkatzHo! 06:30, 5 January 2011 (UTC) PS Haven't been here in a while, just learned about RW Foundation... this is so legit. Awesome stuff.
