Summary

Description
English: Börnerplatz synagogue in Frankfurt am Main was set on fire by a Nazi mob during Kristallnacht, the "Night of the Broken Glass". This black-and-white photograph was taken of the synagogue, still burning the next day, 1938-11-10. The synagogue was damaged beyond repair and a memorial now occupies the site.

Quoted/translated from Dodis E-dossier "The November pogrom":

"Gangs of adolescent boys, armed with axes and crowbars, went through the city and smashed the windows in the Jewish shops, broke into them and smashed everything to bits," reported Hans Dasen (Swiss consulate in Frankfurt a. M) to the [Swiss] embassy in Berlin on November 11, 1938. The administrator of the Swiss consulate in Frankfurt a. M. witnessed the so-called “Kristallnacht” 85 years ago (dodis.ch/46704). Neither he nor his colleague, Consul Franz Rudolph von Weiss in Cologne, saw the pogrom night from November 9th to 10th as a “spontaneous reaction of the German people,” as Reich Minister Goebbels claimed, but clearly recognized “that this inhumane action against the Jews were carried out as planned by higher orders” (dodis.ch/46705).
