Wikipedia was hijacked[edit]
Since the only reason I can see for this article is the psychology/brain thing, we really need to say more than just "the wikipedia article was hijacked" ħuman 04:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Also, the wikipedia thing makes a hell of a lot of sense. I once came up with a similar idea myself. see here. ħuman 05:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
A strange comparison to the bicameral mind and binging on a not-well-known recreational drug[edit]
https://erowid.org/chemicals/dxm/faq/dxm_experience.shtml#toc.5.9
When you take too much Dextromethorphan, you enter a pseudo-psychotic state called "plateau sigma" by addicts and bored teenagers, I quote:
" Finally, thoughts can be totally deranged. Connections between entirely unrelated ideas form, causality goes out to lunch, and one's personality seems pretty much dissolved into the universe. Expect to hear a lot of voices; some people find themselves totally obedient to them. There seems to be a "tireless" quality to the experience, as if one does not feel either fatigue or emotion directly, but only receives information from the inner voices ("sit down now, you're tired"). There are interesting comparisons both to accounts of acute schizophrenia and to Jaynes' postulated bicameral mind (350)."
By personal experience I have had a somewhat playful voice attempt to command me after having too much but I have never been "totally obedient" to them, and I have no past diagnosis of psychosis before taking this drug. The only research I can find relevant to this in the form of a scientific paper is this:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1188627/
To summarize, a man who continuously and stubbornly continues to take this stuff eventually loses his faculties to stay out of the mental hospital, but they are unable to pin a mental diagnosis, or any diagnosis for that matter on him. The paper ends asking people to do more research and with a warning that the stuff is not as safe as believed. While the idea that over the counter cough medicine would prove Jaynes' hypothesis is more than likely bullshit, I do wonder if there is something he said of value.--96.18.111.27 (talk) 03:23, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
