Depression is a mental state of apathy and low mood which.
In everyday vernacular, the terms sad and depressed are used interchangeable; these terms are not the same thing. In fact, depression usually does not involve sadness at all.[1]
Depression (as a mood) is normal[edit]
Depression as a mood does not have negative consequences and is in fact normal to experience.[2] A depressed mood can be a response to a traumatic event such as the death of a loved one.[2] On the other hand, clinical depression, signified by a major depressive episode that lasts at least two week, has negative consequences on a person's health and state of mind.[3]
Depression as a stigma[edit]
In a study group of 46,000 adults, under thirty percent of the 8.4 percent depressed actually sought treament for their depression.[4] Self-stigmatization for those that suffer under depression is a majaor issue because more often than not makes the depression worse.[5][6]
