The Cultural Revolution was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China from 1966 until 1976 that began under Mao Zedong. As the name implies, the purpose of the movement was to eradicate social and cultural structures and institutions deemed to have been the product of reactionary thought, namely feudal and capitalist influence in society. The movement also promoted class struggle, sometimes violently, against Marxist "revisionism". The success of the movement and extent of the violence carried out in its name varied from region to region, and was dependent on the leadership of the local Red Guard youth groups that sprang up around the country as a response.
