It's relevant that the shooter was a white male[edit]

I think the article should mention that the shooter was a white male, since the fact remains that most mass shootings are carried out by white males in the US, not by foreigners, Muslims, etc as far-right pundits portray.

Racism could also be a motive given that many of his victims were racial minorities, this isn't proven, sure, but it's just as good a guess as the conspiracy theories that he was an "antifa" person.--24.89.35.17 (talk) 04:09, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

I suppose? It's hard to tell the motive because he's dead, although I'm aware that hate crimes are a thing. A hypothesis is spreading that his prescription for Valium to blame but that sounds like BS.€h33s3βurg3rF@€3 Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 04:15, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
Most mass shooters are done by men for some reason. Definitely relevant. We still don't know why he murdered all those people. Let's not theorize about the motives of a mass murderer until there is sufficient evidence to know why. ClickerClock (talk) 05:38, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
If white people are responsible for most mass shootings, why isn't there a push to send them back to Africa?—€h33s3βurg3rF@€3 Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 16:29, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
White people made up 55% of mass shooters and 77% of the population, thus less than the average. White males, being males... StickySock (talk) 14:32, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
YOU'RE FUCKING WHITE MALE! Don't try to defend the Religion of Peace like all the other liberals do by deflecting all of the blame to white people and men. AIDS Skrillex 16:57, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
What? Christopher (talk) 17:41, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
@Christopher, here is my explanation. @AIDS Skrillex believes in a myth: that most terrorism is committed by Muslims and that we are somehow covering it up by citing statistics that most mass shooters are white men. Most shootings are committed by white men but it's not because of whiteness. I can't believe that AIDS Skrillex is angry that statistics are true. I'm a feminist but I'm not mad nor do I deny that mothers are more likely to commit infanticide. Politifact has checked and the fact that most shooters are white men holds mostly true.

In this case, the diagnosis is incorrect. The problem is not white men, but men. So, not race, but gender. Only two of the 91 mass shootings were perpetrated by women. —A white male professor of psychology

ClickerClock (talk) 00:27, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

I'm not anrgy at that. I already know a lot of mass shootings are committed by white men. What I am angry about is that fact that the OP is using this particular mass shooting to deflect from Islamic terrorism and defend Islam like the rest of the regressive liberals and say how white people are terrorists, not Muslims. AIDS Skrillex 23:25, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Contradiction. OP is correct, and we don't use "OP" on rationalwiki. Just say the username. Only 6% of terror attack between 1980 and 2005 are by Islamic terrorists.

Since 9/11, Muslim-American terrorism has claimed 37 lives in the United States, out of more than 190,000 murders during this period. Muslim-American Terrorism in 2013 PDF

Between 2008 to 2016, Islamic terrorism only makes up 7% of successful attacks. Even Reason, a right wing news site is saying

The Georgia State researchers conclude: "By covering terrorist attacks by Muslims dramatically more than other incidents, media frame this type of event as more prevalent. Based on these findings, it is no wonder that Americans are so fearful of radical Islamic terrorism. Reality shows, however, that these fears are misplaced."

Such fears are indeed misplaced. Your risk of being killed in a jihadist terror attack in the last 15 years amounted to roughly 1 in 2,640,000. Even if you stretch the period back to include 9/11, the risk would still just have been 1 in 110,000. Your lifetime risk of dying in a lightning strike is 1 in 161,000, and your chance of being killed in a motor vehicle crash is 1 in 114.

This statement by the BoN

since the fact remains that most mass shootings are carried out by white males in the US, not by foreigners, Muslims, etc as far-right pundits portray.

Thus this statement which you are mad at, is correct. Terrorism by Muslims exists and has taken a lot of lives. What the BoN was saying that that white non-Muslim men has been terrorists more than Muslims. —ClickerClock (talk) 04:47, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

It's sad to see many articles and people here in talk be so politically motivated and racist against whites, even having to pull out the selective definition called a "mass shooting". If you tweak the definition, redefine perpetrator categories, or want to include drive-by and gang shootings you get a totally different story. However, it is totally bogus even if you want to still use this term called mass shooting in those instances I just mentioned because it indicates that you care more about certain categories of violent and fatal crime than others. Not only that but that shows you're more interested in scoring political brownie points than actually purporting fact. This is why we use overall violent crime and homicide per 100,000 (rate) to debate policy as it is a more handy and honest statistical tool provided by the FBI. Not only that but we have the National Crime Victimization Survey to help us back up many of these demographic groups in arrest data compared to personal accounts by survey. Now maybe bashing white men while talking with friends is the new cool thing, but if you really want to argue something like policy proposal or justification to divert attention away from other demographics, someone would just go straight to FBI UCR and use homicide rates of different demographics that have a more strict definitions and that would present a more pressing case for public safety in terms of overall crime. --2A03:E600:100:0:0:0:0:1B (talk) 15:35, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

We must be careful[edit]

  1. Don’t name the perpetrator.
  2. Don’t use photos or likenesses of the perpetrator.
  3. Stop using the names, photos, or likenesses of past perpetrators.
  4. Report everything else about these crimes in as much detail as desired.

A bunch of smart people who study mass murders.

So you guys aren't buying into the he worked for the FBI as an illegal arms trafficer selling to ISIS inside the United States in a reverse sting operation similar to Operation Fast and Furious that's why he had two airplanes and no digital footprint and the deal went wrong and was carried out by ISIS after they shot him conspiracy theory? nobsAloha Snackbar 07:00, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Nobs is Poe's Law in action. No one besides nobs can tell whether he is being honest or sarcastic about the Las Vegas shooter allegedly working for the FBI. Sources or it didn't happen. ClickerClock (talk) 07:12, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
This is the latest theory floating. I just summarized information being fed to me. Believe me, I'm not actively looking, this just summarizes a mass of crap passed along. The two airplanes is the only thing that he me curious.
nobsAloha Snackbar 07:23, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
What the?? Ok. I'm just going to provide instructions on making sense to other people. You are losing me.
"I'm going to tell you a wacky theory floating around in my political circles, since most of you are left wing. The wacky theory is apparently the shooter used to work for the FBI, and used to sell illegal weapons to ISIS."
As you can see if you state it like this it make you seem reasonable. ClickerClock (talk) 07:45, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
In the Bowling Green MassacreWikipedia that never happened for instance, the FBI did infact sell weapons to two Iraqi refugees in Bowling Green, KY in a reverse sting. The two had boasted of killing Americans in Iraq and their fingerprints were in fact found on IED fragments by the FBI in Iraq, but there wasn't enough evidence to convict them on any particular death. So the FBI framed them up on weapons and intent to commit terrorism charges. Selling weapons is not unprecedented, but theory of this case is the weapons transfer part went horribly wrong. nobsAloha Snackbar 07:33, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Ok. That makes more sense to me now. It's a good idea to link to the Wikipedia page to provide the people you are talking with a quick overview. Otherwise people get more easily confused as people don't tend stay up to date on the FBI. ClickerClock (talk) 07:45, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Here's what's being said about the aircraft. nobsAloha Snackbar 07:55, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. ClickerClock (talk) 07:58, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
What's giving the theory life is ISIS insistence on taking credit. The other bits of information then tend to fall into place. Right now, conspiracy theories are saying the FBI was behind it, and the more paranoid types would be unwilling to admit it was a big fuck up (like Waco, for example). And of course the FBI would never admit it fucked up, either. nobsAloha Snackbar 08:09, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
I'll just add that conspiracy theory to the article. Thank you for the info. ClickerClock (talk) 08:53, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

@RobSmith, can you do me a favor and collect more links on the conspiracy theories? Google keeps only showing me links to accurate information. ClickerClock (talk) 09:05, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Crazy how this tragedy was spoken about briefly and quickly forgotten[edit]

Someone brings 400 pounds of equipment up 30 floors, sets up a concealed sniper nest, disarms fire alarms and other security systems (at a casino in Las Vegas), removes a window that's 800 pounds of hurricane proof glass, then for 10 minutes shoot as many people as possible with no training or motive whatsoever? It's "common knowledge" that the sky is blue. The sky is in fact colorless. You're implying a conspiracy, substantiate your claims. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 03:59, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
