A favour

Hi buddy, I always fuck up my oversighting and I realised there is no Help file for it. Do you wanna gimmie a run down and/or create a help file? Thanks mate, you are true blue mate. Bet you can't wait to see Robin Hood. Acei9 04:44, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I bet I can. - π 04:53, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Could you re-crat me so I can get some screenshots? - π 04:54, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Done, thanks. Do you think Robin Hood will be better than Master and Commander? Acei9 04:58, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I haven't seen Master and Commander so I can't say. - π 05:00, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I saw "A Dingo Stole My Baby" once. I think there was a really big fucking rock in it. And a dingo. And some whiny mummy lost or threw away her baby. I think. ħumanUser talk:Human 05:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I thought Aborigones stole and traded the baby for a litre of kerosene and some small pox infested blankets? That might have been Its a Wonderful Life though. I get confused. Acei9 05:08, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Okay is this useful or a pile of koala droppings? - π 06:01, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Useful, thanks Pi!!! Acei9 06:04, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Smells like eucalyptus spirit. Move to a help page? Or at least the crat manual? ħumanUser talk:Human 02:16, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
If you want it. - π 02:17, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be a good idea having it be easy to find. Probably the crat manual would be best. A simple link to your subpage would be enough I think. ħumanUser talk:Human 02:41, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Laffer

The current US tax system is an embarrassment. I graphed what people pay in fed taxes a year or two ago, and due to the 15% payroll tax, it's almost a "flat tax". At 10k you pay 30%, at 1,000k you pay under 40%. It's a fucking crime. PS, I archived that thing you kept restoring on my talk page. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:02, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

PS, the people making 1M also can afford fancy accountants to dodge taxes; also also, your talk page is upside down. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I have had a read of the paper, I think you will find my next edit interesting. - π 03:10, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Indeed, since I pulled the number out of my ass. Nice work. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:27, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
The 70% top tax bracket is close to right according to the Swedish study. The biggest problem with the US is how far down the tax burden is. The top tax bracket should not be 38% for people earning over $250,000. It is not a bad mark though. People over $500,000 should be paying of the order 43%, people over a million, more than 50% and people earning in the tens of millions 70%. That way you can afford to remove or shift some of the lower tax brackets. - π 03:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, and people making 20k should not be paying 30% - plus local taxes. Amazing we haven't edit conflicted over there, a real relief to me and you I'm sure also. Since I spend 5 minutes at a time, what was the word at Awk, denigrating your English? :) ħumanUser talk:Human 03:34, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Since I spend 5 minutes at a time, what was the word at Awk, denigrating your English? That was a joke. I think our tax rate could do with some smoothing at the bottom. I am sure we had a 7% rate once for people under 22k a year. And I think there was a 52% once as well. - π 03:39, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I know it was a joke, you replied as such. I just couldn't remember the exact phrase and can't be arsed to go to the aRk again today to chase the exact quote. The 5 minute thing was how long I've been keeping the laugher curve article open to edit. People under 22k shouldn't pay any damn taxes at all, they are barely getting by. OK, sure, 10%. But only if 700-gajillionaires pay a genuine 70%. Oh, have we even talked about the "capital gains tax" in the US yet? It's like 20% or sumthin, and that's the tax on people who make their money by playing with huge piles of money. ħumanUser talk:Human 03:49, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
In Australia capital gain get added to your income for tax purposes. - π 03:51, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
And in US they want to cut it. Keep in mind we have an exemption for profit on homeownership as long as you buy another house. Also there'e a one-time exemption for taking the money and banking it. ħumanUser talk:Human 04:03, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Our exemption for home ownership is if you owned it for more than 13 months and I think there might also be a residency requirement. - π 04:07, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
I think we have similar provisions. Basically it to not tax people on the increase in value of their homes, which probably makes sense, since most of that gain is inflation anyway. ħumanUser talk:Human 05:05, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Cover story editnotices

Please move them out of mediawiki space and under Template:Editnotices as described on Template:Editnotice load, so we don't use two different systems. Keep in mind that Template:Editnotices are also displayed when you view the source, so you should either change the message (e.g. this page is protected because it's a cover story on the main page etc.) or not display anything when viewing source. Also also it would make sense to add the notice at the top of Andrew Schlafly to the editnotice (but keep it on the article too, since it explains why the article is devoid of humer) -- Nx / talk 15:12, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh and, they're not displayed on subpages, unlike the editnotices in mediawiki space. -- Nx / talk 15:13, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Its OK but, you know, it is kinda embarrassing for you. Acei9 08:25, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
At least I have enough self-awareness to be embarrassed. Ken actually believes he wins arguments. - π 08:26, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
I declare utter victory over Pi! Ole! Ole! Ole! Acei9 08:32, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
So yours is the only wiki talk page in history to have new sections made at the top. Awesome. That makes everything so much easier. ħumanUser talk:Human 10:41, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
No, Javascap's is the first, he moved sections manually to the top before I made the extension for him (and for someone who requested it at mediawiki.org). -- Nx / talk 10:44, 9 May 2010 (UTC)
Nx is right! I declare utter victory over Human :) Ole! Etc! Etc! Acei9 10:47, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

catbot

Did not work from what I can tell. Actually was disaster. Please turn off and run undocatbot robot? ħumanUser talk:Human 07:25, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

It has moved template {{cover}} to the talkpage and create an edit notice for all the cover stories. - π 07:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, well, that's all good and all, but how come we didn't discuss this complete change of process? Oh, yeah, because you thought it made sense and could run a bot to do it. Forgive me for interfering. PS, this top-posting talk page thing is really fucking stupid. ħumanUser talk:Human 08:10, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
You mean beside here? - π 08:16, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Didn't know we decided anything there, but I am reviewing now.... ħumanUser talk:Human 08:57, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Nope, I see no decisions on anything there. Sorry to pee on your parade. ħumanUser talk:Human 08:59, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
You mean you don't hang on RecentChanges? For shame! - David Gerard (talk) 11:15, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Silly Pi, you forgot ask Human for permission to ruin his wiki. -- Nx / talk 08:26, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, there's that, too. ħumanUser talk:Human 08:59, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Cover category on talk pages

MediaWiki has a bug in that category membership is sometimes not updated properly when the template that adds the category is changed. To fix it, edit the page and click save - no new revision will be recorded, since you didn't change anything, but it will run the category update (even though it shouldn't do that...go figure) -- Nx / talk 15:41, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Covers

I assume you're going through and redoing most of them now. I don't have time to finish all the abstracts so will just leave you to it, but Catbot added the cover template to the atheism talk page and now that's popping up in the testing area. I assume you're aware of that and this is all work in progress. Scarlet A.pngmoral 14:10, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Never mind, you got rid of the cat while I was typing this. Scarlet A.pngmoral 14:11, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
They will be included by the gold brain now. - π 14:12, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Four dead in Ohio

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

In case my writings haven't made it easy to find. As I recall you were very emotional about my response to that OZ/NZ memoriam. Funny I can't find it at Template:Holydaze now. ANZAC, was it? Sometimes "people who died" tears us all apart, I don't mean to edit war. But a "stupid" star wars joke on a day that is sad to some? Not so cool. ħumanUser talk:Human 07:16, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

PS, your upside-down talk page structure is really fucked up. It is different than every wiki talk page ever that I have encountered. But, it's your talk page, so whatever... ħumanUser talk:Human 07:21, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
That is okay, may be make the template a little more descriptive so those of us who don't know do know. - π 07:36, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Good point, just as I was offensive because I didn't know what ANZAC was, the template should link to a place that explains it and not depend on the curious user googling it. I will try and make better now. ħumanUser talk:Human 07:42, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Burning TK's talk page archives?

Whazzat? P-Foster (talk) 01:07, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Pibot has been archiving the page since it has been locked, the only problem is the page is locked so each day it goes back and archives the same thing again and can't change the talkpage. - π 01:11, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Fuckin' Pibot. I never liked that guy. P-Foster (talk) 01:12, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
I emailed you about that a couple of weeks ago. Did you not get the email? –SuspectedReplicant retire me 01:22, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
It was in my spam folder. I was wondering why nobody seems to email me, I thought you all just didn't like me. - π 01:24, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Nice cover story! tmtoulouse 01:31, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Indeed, classic. I will save "It was in my spam folder. I was wondering why nobody seems to email me, I thought you all just didn't like me." for my all-purpose excuse. It's so much better than "I might have been drunk at the time". ħumanUser talk:Human 07:18, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
If I had found the email earlier it would have been one archive page of mess rather than five. - π 07:37, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
My current job, which is really good and I like a lot? The email saying I had the online test (two hours to go in and fix a deliberately-broken system) got lost in my spam for two weeks until I went looking (shudder) - David Gerard (talk) 08:11, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
"It was in my spam folder" is actually a classic TK excuse.  Lily Inspirate me. 09:54, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Sent. - π 00:57, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Unfortunately the svn version of pywikipediabot is giving me problems, so I'm uploading the one I have on my computer, but it's going to take a while. I'll email you once I've sorted everything out. -- Nx / talk 01:10, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
If we go over to liquid threads, and if it is even needed, I'll write a Perl version of Pibot that just moves the thread to an archive page, it won't even have to edit the page. - π 01:16, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Liquidthreads breaks talkpages down into pages, and when you move a thread it leaves a notice with the link to where it has been moved (e.g.), so moving threads to an archive would be kinda pointless, as it would still leave a bunch of placeholder threads. -- Nx / talk 01:20, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. Pibot can go back to doing odd jobs for me. - π 01:21, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Odd to see you top post as opposed to add new section. ħumanUser talk:Human 05:30, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
He's set "add section" to adding @ the top instead of bottom,, it seems. SusanG (I am a person not a template) 05:34, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Ah, ok. ħumanUser talk:Human 06:25, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Help (birther)

I wrote a section for Birther on the largest and most recent court hearing and uploaded a PDF of the judge's summary and ruling, but I don't know how to link it properly. Would you mind guiding me through it?

Also, is there a better way/place/person to ask for help?

Thanks. --UnicornTapestry (talk) 16:36, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

To display a specific page, use page=number, e.g. (you can use the same parameters you would use with an image, e.g. thumb):

[[File:Court ruling regarding case against Obama.pdf|page=2|thumb]]

To link to it without displaying it, put a colon before the name, e.g.:

[[:File:Court ruling regarding case against Obama.pdf|Court ruling regarding case against Obama]]

Court ruling regarding case against Obama

-- Nx / talk 16:40, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I have moved the section to Obama citizenship denial as it fits better there. Birthers is a fork article as it was getting quite long. - π 00:15, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

catbot

Wow, talk about burying acrimony in... something. What the hell is catbot doing? (too lazy to look at one diff) ħumanUser talk:Human 06:47, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I get it now, your americanizing "licence" to "license"? Oh, ye shall feel the wrath of the brits when they wake up in a few hours. ħumanUser talk:Human 06:50, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
(EC2x)It is just avoiding a template redirect that seems to be causing a problem with categories. While it is at it, I am looking for old WIGO captures that still seem to be misplaced. (EC) I like my sections like that. - π 06:51, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Why are we at the top of your talk page? Is that a new thing you like? I thought I added this at the bum, and then moved it to the toilet again, and here it is pooping on the top of your page! Must be the way you like it...? ħumanUser talk:Human 07:17, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
There is a magicword that places it at the top. When we upgrade to 1.16 we will get liquid threads which will put the most recent conversation at the top (I think). - π 07:19, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Bad idea because it fucks up how every talk page ever that we are used to works. Nice trick, though. ħumanUser talk:Human 07:43, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Liquid threads looks more like a forum than a wiki talkpage. - π 07:44, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Might just be a good thing to get used to, like how firefox now adds tabs next to the live one, instead of way the fuck off to the right. ħumanUser talk:Human 07:54, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Check it out, it will put Pibot out of a job. - π 07:56, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

amusing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_bond well I thought so anyway. ħumanUser talk:Human 04:58, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I have never heard of that, I might have to have a read. - π 04:59, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

protips

  • .doc is more efficient than span.doc, and the span part is unnecessary (unless you want to have something like div.doc that does something different)
  • the child selector (>) is much more efficient than the descendant selector
