This could do with a list of people we have articles on who could be termed Internet tough guys. Any suggestions? Balaam (talk) 10:35, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

What about Anonymous? WéáśéĺóíďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 11:03, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm not sure about this article. The first part seems to be suggesting that we judge people on whether they could genuinely beat us up IRL or are just pretending they could. How about neither? What difference does it make if an internet user is skinny, obese or musclebound? & The long quotes are just macho Tea Party rhetoric which contain a certain amount of tough guy posturing but don't really relate to the internet tough guy as defined in the opening section (i.e. someone who makes empty threats of violence towards other forum users etc.) WėąṣėḷőįďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 11:03, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use a Chuck Norris avatar unironically. Woodgod (talk) 12:00, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Nah, that sounded too eloquent to be an Internet Tough Guy. He would have said something like "Wtf did you just fucking say about me you little bitch take the cock out of you're mouth you fucking faggot I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals and I've been in fuckloads of secret raids on Al-Qaeda and I have over 300 confirmed kills i am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the US armed forces your just another target you fuckin homo You think you can get away with saying that shit too me over the internet. think again fucker Right now I'm contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and tracking your IP so prepare for the storm maggot that wipes out your pathetic life you're fucking dead kid, I can be anywhere anytime and I can kill you over seven hundred ways and that's just with my bare hands i'm not just trained in unarmed combat but I have access to the entire arsenal of the US marine corps and I will use all of to wipe you're miserable ass of the face of the planet you little shit If only you could have known the shitstorm your clever comment was about to bring down on you maybe you would of STFU but you couldn't you didn't and now your paying the price you goddamn idiot I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it your fucking dead kiddo. 33 degree black belt?[edit]

Maybe the "33 degree black belt" is not only a mall ninja but also a freemason as well :) — Unsigned, by: 50.28.169.85 / talk / contribs 00:18, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Dondero's blog[edit]

Unsurprisingly, the blog entry where Eric Dondero promises to ragequit America has been deleted. --TheLateGatsby (talk) 21:20, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

the long examples[edit]

While the vast majority of those who would post something like the Democrat-shunner really are (and only are) Internet tough guys, this does not share the totally unhinged quality of the other long example. And there really are majority-conservative families who might shun less conservative family members. Not sure if this even is a rationalwiki topic; anyway, I think the example is bad and only ambiguously illustrative.

As well, it might be good to add a few shorter examples that threaten violence in slightly less threatening, slightly less unhinged ways than the first long example. Basically, to flesh out the continuum a little.

Fedora?[edit]

Far from the imposing, mean-eyed brute their online persona would suggest, instead you're met with the sight of a fedora-wearing dork in his early 20s.

What's wrong with fedoras? --Let Them Eat Cake (talk) 13:36, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

The Fedora used to be King of the Hats, gracing the scalps of mobsters and Harrison Ford alike. But then MRAs started wearing them, forever tainting this once noble beast. CorruptUser (talk) 13:38, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
MRAs? --Let Them Eat Cake (talk) 16:20, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
It's short for "men that can't stop whining about feminism and how it's ruining society". 141.134.75.236 (talk) 18:18, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
The charge made sense for a while there, when socially awkward idiots would be giving socially awkward idiots fashion advice like wearing a fedora to look suave. Now invoking the word fedora is just another variation of the Argumentum ad cellarium, in that it's petty, almost exclusively untrue, derived from steroetypes, and used by the less mature and adult party in a conversation.
In fact, I've been tempted to add a section on fedoras to that article. ikanreed You probably didn't deserve that 18:53, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, do people who figuratively wear fedoras also figuratively live in basements? Are the two stereotypes in separate sets? BicyclewheelModerator 19:37, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
There's a lot of overlap in the stereotypes, if nothing else. ikanreed You probably didn't deserve that 19:40, 11 June 2015 (UTC)
Also, I just found out that fedoras were first worn by women's rights activists after Sarah Bernhardt wore a hat of that style in the play Fedora. BicyclewheelModerator 19:41, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

I'm in my early twenties and I wear a fedora. Damn. I guess I'll have to scrap the hat. I was really proud of that hat. Still, I'm definitely not a dork and I'm certainly very mean-eyed. My glare has paralysed Dobermans. I'm certainly not an ITG or an MRA though. MRAs and FemiNazis are pretty much the same thing. Don't get me wrong, if you want to say "Hey, women being paid than men is bullshit and it's completely idiotic how if a guy sleeps around he's a player but if a woman does it she's a s**t" then come over here and shake my hand. The same goes for men who say "Well we're not all misogynist, chauvinist pigs you know, some of us are decent and people can be pretty unfair to us these days." My favourite feminist writer is probably Camille Paglia. I've read Dorothy Parker and Angela Carter and I admire Parker's wit and enjoy Carter's fairy-stories but prefer Paglia's politics. --Let Them Eat Cake (talk) 22:47, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

You should definitely explain that to people when you're wearing the hat. WëäŝëïöïďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 22:54, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Hey dude, if you like your fedora, just keep wearing it. Don't let other people ruin a perfectly fine piece of cloth for you. Judging people by what they wear and how they look is pretty lame either way. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 23:02, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
"Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear." ~ Oscar Wilde — Unsigned, by: Let Them Eat Cake / talk / contribs (signed by bot) 00:38, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

This whole discussion is actually based on misconception. The hats that MRAs and other trolls wear are not actually fedoras. They're trilbys. Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Fedoras are made of felt, while trilbys are made of fabric
  • A fedora's brim is much wider and extends flatly in all directions, while the brim of a trilby is smaller and folds up in the back
  • The crown of a fedora is much higher than that of a trilby and has a deeper indent
  • And there are a few other visual/structural differences between the two kinds of hat that are easily visible but not as easy to verbally describe.

Seriously, you might want to look this stuff up yourself. Bottom line, the hats you're referring to aren't really fedoras, and the article should be changed to reflect this. 24.61.154.51 (talk) 15:35, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
