I can't think of a title
Er, thanks for setting me straight yesterday on the whole "radical v. mainstream" feminism thing. I also thought I would tell you I'm not a complete Paultard. But anyway, thanks.
shrugs. :-) I've since been told that my view of "mainstream" is wrong. (rolls eyes). I think everyone lives in their own world. :-) It's no biggie either way.
I did like ADK's term "sex positive". I hope more women who call themselves feminists are that... I don't know.
I'm a sex-positive feminist man. Is that close enough?
depends, does your mother, sister, friend, daughter, and sexual partner (if female) think so? :-)
Mother: no, as she's a conservative Christian and I don't really tell her things. Sister: don't have one. Friend: don't have one. Daughter: don't have one. Sexual partner: don't have one :(
Clearly! A nice Sex-Positive Feminists should have all of those. (well, cept the sister, that's not really in his control).
What type of sex-positive feminists do you look for, and i can send my single friends along. Well, if you live in Denver or Paris. otherwise, they'd have to fly out to you. heh.
I don't think that'd work out so well -- I'm a socially awkward fifteen-year-old boy with virtually no self-esteem and a tendency to make self-deprecating statements.
you're fiveteen? jaw drops. Damn.
How did you get yourself so "mature sounding". ;-)
ok, i don't know any teen girls, sorry.
The age for maturity is dropping every year. This wiki is filled with teenage "aspie fascists" really.
I think it's just because the Internet has given shy fuckwads like me an outlet and form of socialization. It's like the new DnD, only a little less geeky.
Well, don't tell MC - I may be over his "ban all members underneath the age of 16" rule, but you're not. :P
Oh my God, that Constitution is glorious.
only in some ways. I no longer teach at Uni, but I have friends who stuck it out, and they say that while teens may be getting more mature faster, they don't actually figure out how to become independent adults.
That is, at Uni, parents call my friends to tell them they are grading wrong; the parents intervene in housing situations (I don't like my room mate, fix it); parents are their holding the hands of kids as they decide what classes to take; and they clean up the kid's messes.
School was never like that for us. (I was in college 84-2001). We dealt with our choices, tried our best - we did ask for advice, but not "help". parents never called the school to intervene, unless something extremely serious happened. (I heard of one professor who was molesting the girls, so that kind of thing, sure.)
so maybe they aren't allowed to be kid kids long enough, so when it's time to become adults, they aren't ready? or parents just coddle. not sure which.
I did send you Maggie Mayhem's blog didn't I?
Though "sex positivity" is sometimes synonymous with "third wave feminism" from what I've seen.
I'm not sure anymore. I just come, react, interact, and go. I don't pay much attention.
This not particular SFW one - interesting one near the top about "adopt an atheist", but in general it's the sort of "sex positivity" that I like. It's not like telling people what not to do, or being judgmental, but it's very, well, sensible.
See, that's what it all **should** be. "do what feels good". I have my "feminst" rules
- do not do something cause others are doing it.
- do not do something if you feel pressured
- start slow, if you like it go on. Tell your partner you've never done X, so you may or may not do it, but you'll explore (if you want). They should expect you to say "euuu" or "nope" and not get angry, in my mind.
- if you can get paid, and you want to get paid, you should be ABLE to get paid.
I think our culture does push girls (and boys? Probably) into sex too early, and too MUCH for them to handle, so I'd really like better, more open and positive sex discussions. "look it's out there, but you have a life time to try it. start slow and get to know what you like". but that's just me.
As far as I can tell, "sex positive" means "I'm into really kinky shit and the radfems call me a tool of the patriarchy."
I've been waiting for you (and indirectly, your lovely lady's opinions) to chime in on this. :-)
It often is, but when you think about it that's not surprising. If you're "into" something, then you're far less likely to be judgmental, you'll know and have a feeling of what it's like to enjoy something that's not mainstream. All this combines into a knowledge of how to make moral judgments about sexuality that aren't didactic or based on some prescribed belief. So simply how you live gives you a perspective that says "do what you feel is right, but know what you're doing"
Most of the writing about "dirty" sex, whether its peddled by rad fems, fundies, or "therapists" (curse you, Freud!) works the same way: Start off with stereotypical assumptions about said act, JAQ off a bit about how it might have been caused by the patriarchy/Satan/child abuse, and therefore it's bad! Wash, rinse, repeat and you've got an entire book's worth of material, ready for sale!
Sounds about right. But the thing is, unless you practice it personally, what do you really have to go on apart from the stereotypical assumptions?
Of course it's slightly circular in the fact that if you hold such an opinion on it you won't be interested in reading around and beyond those assumptions.
Also - since I can't be fussed with starting a thread for it - new series of Sherlock has Irene Adler as a dominatrix. I am seriously considering taking up smoking from just 15 minutes of this episode so far.
Well, there's the apparently not-so-obvious method of actually talking to people who do practice it.
Yes, but if I held such a negative and stereotypical idea, why would I want to talk to such heathens?
"Vagrant Story: It's not quite clear why, but about half of the cast is walking around in BDSM gear. And spouting faux-Shakespearian dialogue."
This specifically never occurred to me, mostly because if you really want to stretch it you could say that about any Japanese RPG. Though IIRC Callo does spend a significant portion of the game tied up. Oh well.
