2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Summary

Description
English: Conspiracy theorists complain about the different sizes of the Earth and the Moon from NASA pictures and claim they are fake due to that. However, the varying size proportions can easily explained by the result of perspective and angular size. This experiment simulates two NASA pictures using a basketball and a spherical sculpture from Logroño, Spain. The sculpture represents Earth and the basketball the Moon.

The fist picture was taken far away from the basketball and the sculpture so perspective doesn't affect the sizes of both spherical objects.

The second picture was taken close to the basketball and although the sculpture is bigger than the basketball it looks bigger due to perspective.
