An example of one in a NYC suburb at 5:50pm, 11/6, just before clock change

A sunset is a thing that occurs at night everywhere except near the poles. They can be annoyingly early sometimes and thus making them very hazardous for driving. Such as in eastern Maine, when the sunset gets as early as 3:50 PM in the winter, and most people are driving much later then that. Even New York City gets as early as 4:28 PM, and it gets to 4:11 PM in Boston.

A sunset occurs because the sun can only shine so far, and when the sun gets far away from you it can’t shine. Depending on how far it is determines the length of day, and the angle of the sunrise and sunset. A sunset will always occur on the west side, and on an equinox will be close to due west (270°), but will be farther north or south on a solstice. At the equator, or on an equinox, it will occur six hours after the solar noon. But, at the poles, it only occurs at there respective fall equinox, to sink deeper below the horizon for 3 more months and to be below the horizon for 6.
