If you read other translations, you will see that the Arabic word زَيَّنَّا (zayyanna) is one that can be translated to 'adorned', 'decked', or 'beautified', implying that the stars were already there but that God changed them. However, the verse does have another scientific error: that stars protect Earth from demons.
