Phrasing concern[edit]

A traditional western worldview? Indeed it is but it should be noted that such a worldview is most certainly not exclusively western. The phrasing can be interpreted as implying that western societies alone viewed gender this way which is an incorrect assumption. Multiple societies have viewed gender this way and held those beliefs long before westerners came to their shores. Alsto003 (talk) 02:18, 11 February 2015 (UTC) Alex

Given that no competing non-Western views on gender binary are presented in the article.... Peace. AgingHippie (talk) 02:23, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

sex vs gender[edit]

so in the article it says

Many individuals do not fall under the firm constraints dictated by the gender binary. Intersex people are born with genitals not matching their DNA karyotype, or with a deformed or intermediate set

shouldn't we clarify the distinction between sex and gender at some point? this passage seems to imply they're interchangeable Krysa (talk) 23:46, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Conflating gender identity and cultural gender norms?[edit]

"he gender binary is the commonly held view that individual humans belong to one particular gender category: either male or female. It enforces conformity to socially-acceptable forms of gender expression, such as choices in clothing, careers, and romantic and sexual partners." I always read this description of gender binary and frankly, I find it a perplexing non sequitur, not conforming to arbitrary culturally dictated gender norms, everchanging and increasingly outdating, starting from choices in career (for which feminism mainly fought), clothing, style, looks in general, has nothing to do with necessarily not identifying in either male/men or female/women or any gender dysphoria and transexuality (yeah a different thing, we know) at all, but with not agreeing with the gender cultural norms tend to (increasinlgly loosely) attribute to any of these things, even stereotypical behavior. Mixing conventionally feminine coded things with masculine coded things or behavior, may or may not mean you don't identify as a man or woman. You mention romantic and sexual partner which have nothing to do with gender, but sexual orientation too. According to this (social) gender non conformism is non binarism, if binarism means this, feminists and/or non conformist cutting their hair short or wearing pants in the 50's and early 60's would also not be women, according to those now outdated social norms. It's frankly perplexing how some people confuse gender with this. If I'm not mistaken it's what many of the so called non binary people or Tumblr have done, stepping off from mainstream gender convention, all about cool, and not what makes one confused, but proclaiming it makes you another gender, I respect their feeling mind it, but it might also be the case of being confused about what gender identity or dysphoria really mean, I might humbly hypothize. To me this is the primary source of confusion to many "laymen", which make them fall prey of the anti-gender propaganda. No hard feeling intended, it's just to have a discussion and expand this article. --78.15.214.119 (talk) 19:09, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
