Issue of images[edit]
We need to add something about images (which are not covered by CP's license). I'd like some help here:
(please don't edit the template itself, because it is used on 6000 pages) -- Nx / talk 21:37, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
- Are we talking about Karajou's cartoons which capturebot has been grabbing lately? - π 11:54, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- That and also images embedded in articles. -- Nx / talk 11:57, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm. It is kind of hard to argue as we are taking pictures at full resolution. Incidental? - π 12:21, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- If you link to a picture on CP directly (and you can't link to the description page because thumbnails don't work on those), Capturebot will not resize the image. Otherwise it will be the same resolution as used on the CP article.
- Although in the case of the weakly toons fair use applies. -- Nx / talk 12:30, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- How about we say that if we have inadvertently violated your copy-right we will black out offending portions of the picture? - π 12:24, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, something like the text at the bottom of RW articles: "For concerns on copyright infringement please see: RationalWiki:Copyright violations"
- In the case of embedded images we need an excuse saying that we can't automagically determine which ones are free and which ones are not and remove them. -- Nx / talk 12:30, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- I think we just need to say that this is automagic and we are sorry that we might stuff up from time to time. - π 12:32, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- It's an interesting question, since for most of the images they use they claim "fair use/educational". Surely any screenshot of CP we grab, including embedded images, count as "fair use - educating people about CP"? I know that sounds a bit slippery, but still. "we are taking pictures at full resolution" - we are? capturebot is only ever going to get thumbnail sized versions, as used in articles, right? ħuman 20:03, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

My 2c worth: Rather than repeat "images" how about: "The above does not apply to any images which may be embedded in this screenshot and which may or may not be in violation of copyright. These screenshots are created using an automated process which cannot determine which images are free for use. For concerns on copyright infringement please see RationalWiki:Copyright violations." --PsygremlinSpeak! 10:43, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
- The wording looks good to me. It's the best we can do, what with fair use being a grey area. We have the link, and a clear intent to remedy inadvertent copyright issues. --Ask me about your mother 10:50, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
I like it! Messagebox embedded in messagebox! FTW! ħuman 01:27, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
