Fordlândia[edit]
Fordlândia was Henry Ford's attempt to create a rubber plantation in Brazil. It was founded in 1927, when two freighters delivered supplies to create the city. The problems began before the project had even started, as Ford had not consulted an agriculture expert. He chose a hilly location, far from any major settlement, meaning that growing the rubber trees, controlling for erosion, and getting supplies would be difficult.[1]:270 The original manager quit, leaving the freighter captain to manage it. For some reason, Ford kept the captain as manager for almost two years.[1]:270-271 Ford later decided to diversify his original plans by having Fordlandia export timber as well[2]:272 [1]
