K. Shanmugam (born 26 March 1959) is a Singaporean politician and lawyer who has served as Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law since 2015 and 2008, respectively. A member of the governing People’s Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2011, previously serving in Sembawang GRC (1988–2011).
Early Life and Education[edit]
Shanmugam was born in Singapore to Indian Tamil parents. He attended Raffles Institution and later studied law at the National University of Singapore (NUS), graduating with First Class Honours in 1984. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1985.
Legal Career[edit]
Before entering politics, Shanmugam was a prominent litigator, specializing in commercial and corporate law. He became a Senior Counsel in 1998, one of the youngest lawyers to receive the title. He was a partner at Allen & Gledhill, one of Singapore’s largest law firms.
