The Prime Minister of Nepal (Nepali: नेपालको प्रधानमन्त्री) is the head of government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. The Prime Minister holds the highest executive authority in the country and is responsible for running the government, implementing policies, and overseeing the administration. The position is established under the Constitution of Nepal (2015), which defines Nepal as a Federal Democratic Republic with a multi-party system.
Historical Background[edit]
The office of the Prime Minister of Nepal was first established in 1799 during the reign of King Rana Bahadur Shah, though the modern role evolved significantly over time. The position gained prominence during the Rana regime (1846–1951), when the Rana oligarchy ruled Nepal as hereditary prime ministers, reducing the monarchy to a ceremonial role. After the fall of the Rana regime in 1951, Nepal transitioned to a constitutional monarchy, and the Prime Minister became an elected official.
Following the 2006 democracy movement and the abolition of the monarchy in 2008, Nepal was declared a Federal Democratic Republic. The 2015 Constitution further solidified the Prime Minister's role as the head of government, with the President serving as the ceremonial head of state.
