- Straw was the main material of practice dummies in sword fighting and archery (straw man)
- Chinese people would often substitute a straw animal for a real one in their sacrifice rituals (straw dog) (really nice thing to do!)

Look at the RW page Strawman where the word "manning" is short for Straw-Man-ning. Here see "extreme manning" (which would be better said "straw-manning using the extremes" and read the chapter in Hatcher; it is about arguing and how to best and opponent in an argument without resorting to drawing your sword line 36 l+m.
By the way straw manning is similar to manipulative straw dogging in business where an inferior product is proposed to "set up" the customer(mark) for the next "better, more expensive product'
