"The purpose of life is survival" - says who? Most of what most of us (first world inhabitants) do in their day to day life is irrelevant to survival at best. --Idiot numbre 188 (talk) 18:25, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
- The whole concept of a "purpose of life" is begging the question, since purpose implies intent & therefore design. Things which were designed can be said to have a purpose: buildings, tools, governments, etc. serve the purposes of those who design & benefit from them. But can we say that planets, mountains, rivers, or bacteria, for example, have a purpose? Only if we assume that they're intelligently designed, in which case they must all serve God's purposes, whatever those might be. Otherwise, we can account for how these things have developed, but they don't have an intrinsic purpose. The same goes for life forms, except perhaps when they've been selectively bred for a specific purpose. As for humans, a person might choose to devote their own life to some purpose of their choosing, but the idea that there is an overall purpose to human life is no more valid than that there's an overall purpose to death.
