2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Draft:Failure to elucidate

A Failure to Elucidate is a Logical fallacy in which a term used is kept intentionally vague and undefined, potentially being only "defined" with examples.

Examples[edit]

Kent Hovind is notorious for never defining the word Kind, only giving several examples. If "kind" means species, it is pointed out that speciation occurs. If "kind" means any other more general taxonomic level, counterexamples will still be provided. He usually gives examples such as the the "dog kind" and the "cat kind."

Another potential example is defining Failure to Elucidate by only using the above Kent Hovind example.
