Essay talk:No2AV

I am amazed at the crazy nonsense spouted by AV opponents in the UK. In Australia, we have had AV for something like the last hundred years, and the sky hasn't fallen in. Our political system is far from perfect, but its not noticeably better or worse than the UK's. AV is better, because it makes minority governments more likely. Minority governments are better, because when one party has total power, it can make all kinds of crazy legislation and no one can do anything about it until the next election. With a minority government, crazy legislation is less likely, since it has to rely on other parties to support its legislative programme. --Maratrean (talk) 06:53, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

I keep telling people that if it wasn't for the coalition it would be worse. Now we have a Tory government tempered a little by having to keep a sizable chunk of the Lib Dems happy rather than a Tory government that can do what the fuck it wants. Scarlet A.pngsshole 06:36, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Me, I roll my eyes at all the slime thrown at the Liberal Democrats. Politics is supposed to be all about compromise; even though might roll our eyes at the absurdity when compromising politicians try to toady to purist constituents, at least the need to compromise helps to keep fanatics out of power. And Lib Dem policies weren't exactly realistic, so the best they could have done was to temper the Tory ones a little - a full blown Conservative manifesto would have been an utter disaster. As much as the mud thrown at them may be deserved in places, I think realistically speaking they can say "mission accomplished". As Andy Parsons on Mock The Week pointed out, they could have said anything they liked as their chances of power were so slim. And if they did get in, the public would be like "it's okay Nick, we weren't expecting that one either". Scarlet A.pngsshole 22:16, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
