Well the poll suggests that 20% here believe psychiatry to be a pseudoscience. Not bad figures actually and more than I expected. I know I am like an atheist on an intelligent design forum but hey ho - that is 'Rational'wiki for ya.--Dirk Steele (talk) 13:02, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, it's pretty fun, though also a little depressing. RW really has a thing for trolls. 99.50.98.145 (talk) 13:28, 11 November 2012 (UTC)

Stanford prison experiment issues[edit]

The Stanford prison experiment I think highlights why psychiatry has not advanced in the treatment of those with mental illnesses, Zimbardo's Stanford prison experiment was an experiment where there was situation of prisoners and guards made up of normal well adjusted individuals. This experiment was meant to go on for two weeks but was cancelled 6 days into the experiment because the guards became violent.

This same model is used for treatment of the most vulnerable people in society. Why has psychiatry not looked at these findings for treatment and come up with a new model through experimentation that reduces this violence?

I unlike psychiatry do intend to run the experiments based on what we know of the Stanford prison Experiment and find a better way of treating the most vulnerable in society and I think this should be one of the first experiments that psychiatry should have done years ago.

I always welcome criticism and even name calling. However if you can provide evidence that psychiatric treatment using the model of the Stanford prison experiment model is better I will happily look at such evidence. I wont look at debunking as I am interested in evidence gained through experiment over opinion.

Other scientific fields allow anyone to contribute but psychiatry only allows those that share its views to be accepted. Science is not authoritarian as it questions authority. Psychiatry only accepts studies that agree with the bio model and this is where it has failed as a scientific enterprise. This is exactly why homeopathy is a psuedoscience because it only allows and accepts those with the same views.

Again, I could be wrong but I call for evidence that psychiatry does accept alternative views. I can provide many examples that have not been accepted by mainstream psychiatry despite great experimental conditions done by psychiatrists and even peer replicated experiments that have just been read been and ignored instead of being used as a new form of treatment or as evidence for a basis of a theory.

I am prepared to read whatever evidence or theories are presented because I ultimately want to learn and understand over just taking a for or against stance about psychiatry and fully acknowledge that I personally suffer from confirmation bias and many other faults just as any human being does no matter how careful they are.
