2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

A Malamanteau is a neologism for a portmanteau created by incorrectly combining a malapropism with a neologism. It is itself is a portmanteau of malapropism and portmanteau.

Really?[edit]

No, not really. It was made up by xkcd author Randall Munroe in a May 2010 xkcd comic strip.[1] It subsequently lead to thousands of people try to look it up on Wikipedia - only to find that there was no article and the word didn't exist. This lead to a literal metric fuckton of butthurt as people thought "hey, let's make it an article!!! L0L!!!!11!" while more boring regular Wikipedia editors tried to repeatedly delete it.[2] They even got to the point of trying to claim that "bbcnewsamerica.com" was a real news site, so was reliable.[3]

Undoubtedly, it was totally hilarious for all involved. It was probably less of a joke on words that Wikipedia uses a lot in articles, and more a joke on xkcd fanboys who like harassing Wikipedia.
