Talk:H-1B Visa
What is this?
I know, I could check H1-B in Wikipedia (or Conservapedia), but since we are supposed to be an encyclopedia too, a definition would be nice. Superstitious animistEd at CP 06:08, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
- Well, technically we're not an encyclopedia. But I know what you mean—the article isn't helpful at all. -- Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 06:21, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
- Well, technically not, but our purpose is to give factual information etc. etc. I'd say that a typical Ed Poor article has no place here - unless it is Fun/Lulz, that is (yes, I know - our guidelines don't explicitly encourage purposeless, funny articles, but they are necessary IMHO). WP:
The H-1B is a non-immigrant visa in the United States under the Immigration & Nationality Act, section 101(a)(15)(H). It allows U.S. employers to employ foreign guest workers employed in specialty occupations. The regulations define a “specialty occupation” as requiring theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor including, but not limited to, architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine and health, education, law, accounting, business specialties, theology, and the arts, and requiring the attainment of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as a minimum. Likewise, the foreign worker must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and state licensure, if required to practice in that field. H-1B work-authorization is strictly limited to employment by the sponsoring employer. --Warty 06:25, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
- Oh, thank you. Now at least I know what it is about, but I still don't understand if it is a good thing or not. The WP quote above seems positive, the RW article negative. ;-) Superstitious animistEd at CP 06:57, 27 March 2008 (EDT)
Is this whole page an extended joke, and I didn't get it?[edit]
First, it's H-1B, not H1-B. Second... "20 million illegal invaders"? Bwhuh? This is seriously the tone we're setting here?
I'd love to retool this whole section, discuss the valid criticisms of the H-1B system and why you can be against H-1B visas and for relaxed immigration restrictions and not be a hypocrite. Any objections? Heywood (talk) 21:57, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- How about floating some particulars here on the talk page first? Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 22:10, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
- My biggest problem with the page is that there seems to be an awful lot of snark and very little information. And "Many politicians that oppose the H-1B Visa program have no problem offering a blanket amnesty to 20 million illegal invaders" sounds like the frame-flipping often employed to defend the status quo against reform. The whole immigration system is badly broken, and H-1B visas are an iconic example of that. I'd like to write about the problems, the abuses, some proposed solutions, as well as highlight the people who are against those solutions and why. But I'm not interested in getting into an edit war, if the current page reflects a consensus on The Way Things Ought To Be. Heywood (talk) 17:57, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Why was my edit deleted? I have MANY years in the IT field. Thanks, Greg — Unsigned, by: 173.13.69.21 / talk / contribs
- Wall of text, rambling narrative. Narrow, perhaps undue, focus on Indian programmers. The H-1B is used in other corporate spheres as well. I don't doubt your MANY years of experience, but why should the mob believe you are a reliable authority on this or any other subject? Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 16:50, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
I appreciate the criticism. I will work on improving it. Unfortunately, tielec01 seems to delete without giving any reason, or ways to resubmit. Thanks again. ~~fairandunhinged~~ — Unsigned, by: 173.13.69.21 / talk / contribs
- This article seems kinda pointless to me.--Weirdstuff (talk) 18:51, 11 July 2013 (UTC)
