2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Pykrete versus Pykecrete[edit]

Most places seem to have it as 'Pykrete', but the reference I found at the royal naval museum had it as 'Pykecrete'. Maybe it's a feature of it primarily being spoken rather than written down, but I assumed that the museum would probably have more primary sources to draw on and hence be the most reliable account. Getting a definitive answer seems to be hampered by the lack of an 'official' Royal Navy source. Queexchthonic murmurings 10:20, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

The RN source also mispells "Habakkuk" and most other sources don't do that, either. I'm not sure it's particularly well researched, to be honest, since some of the stuff I've seen suggests the story of the ricochet was either an urban legend (possibly based on the disastrous Great Panjandrum test) or that it was just some random US Navy officer holding the gun. Fair. wp has the misspelling of Habakkuk, but it's unsourced. I had a quick look to see if anyone had published a history of the project (would make a killer Christmas gift), but the closest I could find was My Tank is Fight which is intended to be a bit excitable and is out of print anyway. So yeah, let's leave it, it's a small kinda-on-mission aside anyway. Queexchthonic murmurings 10:33, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
