Another Church of God Shooting[edit]

I don't want to get into pedantry about stuff like this, but it isn't a church shooting if he went into the church after the shooting. SophieWilder 20:28, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

The "Crickets" Argument[edit]

I've seen this type of argument being used variously by both the left and the right, that because a certain tragedy didn't receive their acceptable standard of mass media coverage, that it's the result of intentional silence on the media to downplay causes they don't support. Right wingers incessantly bitch and moan every time they find out a white person is a victim of police brutality and claim "the media doesn't report this because it doesn't fit their agenda." I don't see why RationalWiki should hold the moral high ground if they'd just as swiftly ridicule that occurrence. There are several reasons why a particular news story might not get coverage and I believe most of it is all arbitrary. There may not be extra details that make it more notable (we do have a lot of mass shootings after all). Could be circulating at the same time as other big news stories. Could be in a smaller news market. Point is, I think it's inane to complain about relative news circulation when notability in the news is relatively subjective and arbitrary. People tend to throw out the "crickets" argument as a tu quoque because THEIR biases cause them to have an axe to grind. To top it off, the argument that church shootings are less subject to media scrutiny sounds pretty dated since we've had high profile cases like the Charleston and Sutherland Springs church shootings that HAVE garnered heavy media attention and punditry.
