Sher Bahadur Deuba is a Nepalese politician who has served as Prime Minister of Nepal more times than anyone can reasonably remember, a feat that speaks volumes about both his political tenacity and the perpetual chaos of Nepalese politics.[1] Born on June 13, 1946, in Dadeldhura, a region as scenic as it is politically volatile, Deuba has managed to remain a fixture in Nepal’s political arena for decades, surviving scandals, coups, and the occasional stint in jail.[2]

He is a senior leader of the Nepali Congress. This party has historically championed democratic ideals but has also been accused of indulging in the kind of patronage politics that would make a 19th-century American political machine blush. His career is a masterclass in political resilience, having first assumed the role of Prime Minister in 1995 and then returning to the position four more times. This makes him something of a political boomerang—no matter how many times he’s knocked down, he always seems to come back.

His time in office has been a mixed bag. On the one hand, Deuba played a role in Nepal’s transition from a monarchy to a federal democratic republic, a process that was about as smooth as a Himalayan avalanche. On the other hand, his administrations have been dogged by allegations of corruption, inefficiency, and a tendency to prioritize political survival over meaningful reform. Critics argue that his leadership has often been more about maintaining power than addressing Nepal’s deep-rooted issues, such as poverty, inequality, and political instability.

One of the more dramatic moments in Deuba’s career came in 2005, when King Gyanendra arrested him during the monarch’s short-lived and deeply unpopular attempt to restore absolute rule. Deuba was accused of corruption, though many saw the charges as politically motivated. The arrest did little to dent his popularity among his supporters, largely because corruption allegations in Nepalese politics are about as surprising as monsoon season.

Deuba’s personal life has also attracted its fair share of attention. His marriage to Arzu Rana Deuba and fellow politician, has led to speculation that their union is as much about political strategy as it is about romance. Together, they form one of Nepal’s most influential power couples, a dynamic that has drawn comparisons to other political partnerships, though with a distinctly Nepalese flavor.
