The name's Spoony, or (((Spoony))) if you please! I acquired the name due to a couple of friends noting my love for early RPGs and my love of music. It's natural I'd be called a "Spoony Bard"!
A Brief summary
I've mostly came to RationalWiki after my dangerous encounter with the world of Conspiracy Theories. I'm past that phase after a dangerously close call of becoming a crank myself, and after a bout of crippling depression, here I am, with an obsession with Linguistics and anything "Retro". Maybe one day that would be a story to tell, as I personally feel some people don't exactly know what it's like to be so close. It's like I lost 5 months of my entire life. Sane people ridicule them, and indeed get sick of listening to them, for good reason. Crazy people feel intellectually free, and "woke", for the wrong reasons. Being between those two "extremes", for a lack of a better word, can feel like a fate worse than death. The very structure and unfalsifiability of those theories can drive certain types of people, sensible or otherwise, down a path they desperately avoid.
The entire project has helped me become the person I am, for better or for worse, and has shaped even my very worldview. One where nothing you do matters except a gathering of knowledge. I'm not as eye-opening as say, This guy over here, but I feel my experience in the conspiracy realm could help this wiki grow. I now help edit the wiki in hopes of improving my writing (And believe me, it does need work) and expressing a rationalist viewpoint that I have trouble of expressing off the computer, and indeed, in my own head. Well, and to stay sane and not become a crank myself. Finding mental help on that has been less successful and it's becoming increasingly clear to me that my psychiatrist cares jack. Bouts of absences for personal reasons have been depressingly common for me unfortunately, but I ask as a member of the community to at the very least assume good faith if I end up making an unorthodox decision as a sysop here.
I call myself a leftist. I'm vehemently against authoritarianism and every form bigotry you can think of, and believe that their views shouldn't even be given the light of day. While I'm pro free-speech, there is a line that needs to made lest the alt-right's shitty opinions gain more traction and actual hate crimes and groups begin to rise. Their cries about being silenced for their opinion is bullshit, and they would do the same (and likely lethally in real life) if they were in charge. Where that line should be, I do not know. If I was to seriously give a label to my beliefs, I would be an anarchist, anti-capitalist and would unironically support antifa.
Raised Jewish, then Lutheran when I switched houses at a young age. Today I'm agnostic, leaning towards atheism. I believe that "god" as we know the term is entirely in the realm of science but has no evidence of existing. Organized religion has been something I have hated ever since I was 16 due to the hypocrisy of the religious right and the clear abuse many ministries and churches subtly subject their followers to. I could write a whole tome actually.
Sciency magic stuff
Alties are dangerous, fuck every form of denialism, yada yada you get the idea. I think Psychology is under-funded and not appreciated enough and fuck every parent who doesn't "believe" in it.
I'm naturally curious about many different interests like programming, linguistics and general science. It's led me to thinking I'm too much of a "master of none" type of guy so idk what I want to do in college yet. I guess that comes with being one of the younger editors on this site.
Other than that, I love video games. Surprising? I'll play anything but I mostly play fighting games these days due to my love for competition. I just wish I could get the time/courage to make some friends at my local meetups.
Linguistics intersts me to an uncanny level. I grew up on Yiddish but forgot all of it at a very young age. I only speak English, but I've always loved studying the structure of different languages and how they're related, and you don't need to know 30 of them for that.
I'm a fucking loser like all of you. Glad to be at your service.
