Basic information[edit]

What is a genetically modified organism?[edit]

A genetically modified organism, or GMO, is an organism that had its genetic code altered using the technique of DNA recombination. By using this technique, arbitrary genes can be inserted at specific places in the genome.

The term "genetically modified organism" is rarely used in scientific or technical contexts, because it is misleading. DNA recombination is not the only method of genetic modification. Others include selective breeding, mutation breeding and hybridization.
