Canary Mission is an anonymous, pro-Israel doxing website whose purpose of existence is to destroy and endanger the lives of people who criticize Israel.[1][2] This is accomplished by publishing personal, private information about people who criticize or call out human rights violations committed by the state of Israel. It has been called a blacklist, and hundreds of lives have been ruined by false accusations of antisemitism at the hands of Canary Mission. Its targets include college and university students[3], professors[4], professionals[5], doctors[6], and organizations[7]. In most cases, the person's supposed crime is nothing more than attending a pro-Palestine event or protest or simply raising a voice in support of human rights for Palestinians.

Views[edit]

In spite of originating in the USA, Canary Mission exists to serve the interests of the Israeli State and cover up or defend any crimes committed by its government or military in order to protect its image in the West. Its modus operandi is silencing and defaming critics on phony accusations. From its beginnings in 2015, it has been clear that the Canary Mission's goal is to damage the lives of activists, according to "Against Canary Mission", a Palestinian human rights group formed to combat the Canary Mission.[8]

Doxing[edit]

In order to ruin the lives of people who disagree with them, Canary Mission creates a profile on its website for its target person. The profile contains a picture of the person being defamed, as well as personal information (employer, links to friends and acquaintances, names of colleagues, out-of-context quotes from social media posts, and even general place of residence if available). The text is framed in a way to convince the reader that the accused is a monstrous antisemite who is entirely motivated by hatred of Jews and support of terrorism.[9]. The accused person is then subject to harassment on social media, and the Canary Mission reposts its attacks multiple times per day.[10] Because the people running the Canary Mission hide behind a mask of anonymity, being the pathetic cowards that they are, the accused never knows the identity of those accusing him or her, and, consequently, does not have the chance to address or challenge the accuser. Even though it pretends to be educating people against antisemitism and "anti-Israel" activism (because the Israeli government is immune to criticism and the rule of international law), Canary Mission's goal is objectively NOT education, but deterrence.[11]

There is no discrimination in who the Canary Mission goes after: black, brown, Muslim, Arab, and even Jewish people who don't align with Canary Mission's views, are at risk of being defamed.[12] However, a majority of its targets end up being members of historically disadvantaged or vulnerable groups.

People who are defamed by the Canary Mission risk having their future ruined, struggling to obtain employment or a decent reputation in society.

The Canary Mission has a list of people called "ex-Canary." This list is for people who were defamed by the Canary Mission, but have since renounced their political and moral positions and have sworn allegiance to Israel, denounced human rights for those mistreated by Israel, and expressed disapproval of "anti-Israel groups" (criticizing policies of the Israeli government is antisemitism in the eyes of the Canary Mission).[13]

Suppression of Free Speech[edit]

Colleges and universities are the largest targets of Canary Mission's smear campaign. Its tactics have been compared to McCarthyism and the Red Scare[14][15]. Professors and students who criticize Israel and its policies are silenced, which poses a major obstacle to productive discourse about international affairs and politics. To the Canary Mission, Israel can do no wrong and is exempt from following international law and respecting human rights. As a result of this attitude, people who raise concerns about human rights, particularly for Palestinians, as they are directly impacted by Israel's anti-Palestinian policies, are silenced and smeared as antisemites.

Conflating antisemitism and criticism of Israel[edit]

Canary Mission considers anyone who criticizes Israel and its human rights violations[16][17][18] to be an antisemite. It has published blog posts conflating anti-Zionism with antisemitism[19], seeming to forget that the most ardent and dangerous Zionists are fundamentalist Christians in the West.[20] In doing so, it ironically minimizes real, actual antisemitism that occurs in the world. To add to the irony, this conflation harms Jewish people by tying all Jews (including those who denounce Israeli policies) and their identity to the actions and policies of a foreign government. Instead of focusing on real hatred, bigotry, and violence toward Jews[21] at the hands of true racists and antisemites like the Ku Klux Klan and various groups in Donald Trump's MAGA cult, Canary Mission targets people who put forth valid criticisms of Israel. To Canary Mission, an antisemite is anyone who disagrees with them, criticizes human rights violations committed by Israel, supports Palestinian human rights, or hurts the feelings of pro-Israel people (both Jewish and non-Jewish).

Anti-Palestinian Views[edit]

Canary Mission's pro-Israel actions are concentrated around the Palestine-Israel conflict. Its presence has increased since the start of the genocide in Gaza in 2023 following the Hamas-led terrorist attacks on October 7. Hundreds of people who have expressed negative views of Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories or called out Israel's war crimes in Gaza[22] have been profiled and defamed by Canary Mission. Canary Mission's Islamophobic and anti-Palestinian views have been well-documented.

Support for "Pallywood" rhetoric[edit]

In a campaign directed at the media in April 2025,[23] Canary Mission indicated that "Pallywood", a derogatory word and racist conspiracy theory that says all Palestinian suffering inflicted by Israel is staged and faked, is a legitimate term and a real thing. In other words, Canary Mission denies the existence of Palestinian suffering over the past several decades, including the day-to-day documentation of murder and mayhem since the start of the genocide in Gaza. This, in effect, puts them on the same plane as Holocaust deniers. In the same article, it was claimed that the media is biased against Israel, despite the objective fact that the Western media has bent over backward for Israel nonstop since the start of its genocide in Gaza (lying by omission, overtly defending Israel's war crimes, giving news articles manipulative titles to downplay an atrocity committed by Israel). One way in which Pallywood conspiracies are pushed is to diminish faith in Palestinian reporting since Hamas runs the Gaza Health Ministry, and anything involving Hamas must be a lie or fabrication.

Opposition to Palestinian Resistance[edit]

The Canary Mission opposes the right of Palestinians, as an occupied people, to resist occupation, which is enshrined in international law,[24][25] believing that all forms of Palestinian resistance are synonymous with terrorism and murder of Israeli citizens.[26] It thinks that Israel should have a right to be armed to the teeth in order to defend itself, but the Palestinians should be forced to lay down arms and surrender their right to resist Israel's occupation of Palestine. According the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is unlawful.[27] However, Canary Mission is insistent on defying the ICJ and painting Palestinians as terrorists.

Deception by manipulation[edit]

Canary Mission routinely manipulates stories about criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian rights in order to deceive its brainwashed supporters. This is particularly visible regarding pro-Palestine encampments on college campuses. It accused the Columbia University protestors, especially their leader, Mahmoud Khalil, of supporting and justifying Hamas.[28] Anyone who supports Palestinian human rights or denounces Israeli human rights violations must be a Hamas supporter. Canary Mission supported ICE's illegal detainment of Khalil and called his supporters "anti-American", and then bitched about a "hero's welcome" by his supporters after his release from detainment. It claimed that on the year anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Khalil led a "pro-Hamas protest" at Columbia University. Since they failed to show how it was pro-Hamas, it can be safely assumed that it was a protest calling for the end of Israel's genocide in Gaza.

In November, 2023, Canary Mission targeted Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania, accusing them of being antisemitic toward Jewish students and being anti-Israel (which, of course, is the same thing as being antisemitic, according to Canary Mission).[29][30] Regarding Harvard University, Canary Mission took offense to the Palestine Solidarity Committee's statement attributing responsibility to Israel for ongoing violence in the Levant; the Committee provided context for the violence, highlighting the oppression and abuse of Palestinians since at the hands of the Israeli government and military since 1948. Canary Mission then attempted to provide its own "context" by essentially removing all the context and showing that they believe the terrorist attacks of October 7 took place in a vacuum, covering up the decades-long conflict preceding the attacks. They used overly emotive language to describe the terrorist attacks and denied any wrongdoing by Israel. Canary Mission accused Harvard Law Review editor Ibrahum Bharmal of assaulting Jewish students. In reality, all Bharmal did was participate in a pro-Palestine die-in that involved people holding signs that said "Stop the Genocide in Gaza!" To the Canary Mission, that constitutes assault. Canary Mission's attack on the University of Pennsylvania opened by pushing the long-debunked hoax that babies were beheaded on October 7[31][32][33]. The UPenn page on Canary Mission's website lists numerous faculty members with baseless claims of them supporting terrorism and Hamas.

In February 2024, the Canary Mission wrote a hit piece on Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American serving in Congress, titled "Rashida Tlaib: the political face of Hamas in America."[34] Canary Mission expressed disappointment at the fact that Tlaib didn't vote in favor of the "No Benefits for Hamas Terrorists Act." Citing Tlaib's reasons for voting against the bill, Canary Mission accused her of playing the victim, which is, ironically, what Canary Mission and its supporters do professionally. The hit piece accused Tlaib of not caring about Israeli victims of October 7 because she tried to push for a ceasefire shortly after the start of the genocide in Gaza. It claimed that Tlaib's desire for a ceasefire was motivated entirely by support for terrorism and the destruction of Israel.

Jewish people who support Palestinian human rights[edit]

Canary Mission does not support Jewish people who advocate for Palestinian human rights. One of their targets is Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), a leftwing organization comprised of non-Zionist Jews who are critical of Israel, and one of the larger Jewish organizations that advocated for Palestinians. Canary Mission accused JVP of supporting terrorists, and criticized it for amplifying the voices of critics of Israel.[35]
