Pirates actually spoke like this - in fact Blackbeard actually WROTE his log like this- mainly due to the amount of grog they drank which caused brain injuries due to striking their heads on low bulkheads and also Wechsler-Korshakov's syndrome. The ration in the Royal Navy was a pint of rum and eight pints of small beer a day. If most people drank that much, they would talk like it too. Lt. Robert Maynard wrote in his account of the death of Blackbeard at Okracoke " He styl'd us 'Young puppies' and said "May the devil take my soul if I ever offer ye quarter or asks it of the likes of you!'". Truly a martyr of Talk Like a Pirate Day and should thus be made a saint of Pastafarians everywhere. Dreadnought 19:36, 13 December 2007 (EST)
My son brought home a 2008 Calendar from National Geographic Kids Magazine and it lists 19 September as "International Talk Like A Pirate Day"- so whether it sucks or not, it is recognised by the National Geographic Society -which is good emugh for me, mateys.Haharr!
