Powell's White Jar of Powder Was Obviously Prop Anthrax[edit]

Give the man his due, explain that Colin Powell likely intended the jar to represent anthrax.

Fucked[edit]

I'd always heard it as "Fucked Up Data", which was used to spread fear, uncertainty and so forth. --Kels 07:05, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

I thought it was onomatopoeic (the sound of a damp, soggy lump of flatulence hiting a debating table). KeepYour legs together! 07:11, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

References needed[edit]

Are there any references available that explain Microsoft's use of FUD? --Randolf 05:06, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

There are plenty of specific examples of them using FUD (if I had to pick one to use as reference on here, I would scroogled.com), but if we're going to do extensive Microsoft FUD examples, that would be better done on the Microsoft article. Nullahnung (talk) 02:08, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Scope[edit]

So when does this tactic apply? I don't really get that from reading the article as such... Pizzameister (talk) 22:53, 28 January 2016 (UTC)

This is simply a fancy name for "disinformation", imho, though mostly used in programmer debates about Microsoft (e.g. when discussing Limux where Microsoft made dubious claims about alleged costs). Unfortunately, this article does not separate it from another concept by Microsoft, the "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" strategy that is far more notorious and has done quite serious damage to the industry. "Embrace, extend and extinguish" is not at all the same as FUD. The former relates more closely to "divide and conquer" or something of that sort. FUD is a rhetorical ploy, a PR game. EEE has to do with actually affecting the capabilities of something. FUD doesn't affect anything but the right people's perception in the right way of said thing. So, they're not the same at all. Rename?[edit]

Really awkward name b/c "Fear, uncertainty". "FUD" might honestly be better; WP does it. αδελφός ΓυζζγςατΡοτατο (talk/stalk) 23:33, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

What? Wikipedia article has the same title as ours. ŴêâŝêîôîďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 00:20, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
