A debasement[edit]
Historically, "conscientious objector" has only been used for people who refuse military service based on (usually) life-long membership in a religion that objects to killing (e.g. Quakerism). It's a sad debasement of the term to use it with regards to someone who obviously wears their beliefs on their sleeve and refuses to sign a piece of paper that has nothing to do with hurting anyone. - I strongly object to calling these people "conscientious objectors." That term applies to individuals who refuse a legally imposed duty about which they have no choice. No one is compelled to be a court clerk. People who do not want to perform the duties in a job description are not "conscientious objectors." At a minimum, the phrase should be placed in scare quotes in the title.---Mona- (talk) 06:32, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
