Um, I think (and so does Firefox) that the word is portmanteau. Plural portmanteaus. Or is the "x" a commonwealthicism? ħuman 15:25, 18 December 2008 (EST)
- It looks like it goes both ways. But apparently, the correct usage of "portmanteaux" is only for plurals. That would be my error. "Portmanteau" is indeed what American dictionaries list as the singular, but -s and -x are acceptable for the plurals. --15:28, 18 December 2008 (EST)
- Fixed now. Thank you for the head's up. I used a non-dictionary source for the spelling, which is my error in the first place. --Irrational Atheist 15:32, 18 December 2008 (EST)
On-Mission?[edit]
There are articles about portmanteaus such as Manufactroversy. Perhaps we could make "Portmanteau" a category? --TheLateGatsby (talk) 03:52, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
"Manufactroversy" has to be one of the ugliest words I've ever come across.
Someone missed the fact that my introductory paragraph was semi-humorous.--Albannach (talk) 16:19, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Note that you are replying to a conversation that ended 8 months ago and concerned a previous (now deleted) version of the article.
- As for your introductory paragraph, it's not immediately obvious how serious it is.--ZooGuard (talk) 16:29, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
- Don't worry, I have. But that manufactur... word gets my goat, it's horrible. Not only do I have trouble saying it, but I can barely spell it, and frankly the long version works better!
- "it's not immediately obvious how serious it is." - Oh dear, Americans! Not great ones for irony. Note the Latin is ironic too...--Albannach (talk) 17:09, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
