2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Talk:Rabbi

Theory[edit]

In theory, any Jew who teaches Jewish law or the Hebrew language can claim the title of "Rabbi". In practice, it refers to the ordained Jewish clergy.

This is a little bit too theoretical, IMO. Any bridge-builder could rightly call himself pontifex. Doesn't make himself/herself a pope... larronsicut fur in nocte 16:46, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Two lame jokes and one antisemitic joke (Greedy Jews much?) Bibliophile20 (talk)

Priests[edit]

The reference to rabbis as the equivalent of priests might be a bit misleading since Judaism has a priestly class (the kohanim), even if they don't actually function as priests anymore.

Page edit[edit]

I'm engaging in a comprehensive edit to address the prior points (what it means to be a rabbi, getting rid of the rather offensive "trivia" and adding other context of the culture, and add some history and context to the page, as well as sources, because this is extremely inaccurate, and that Greedy Jew joke is blatantly antisemitic.
