Talk:Racial profiling
"Racial profiling is a rationalization for identifying individual humans by a particular race or ethnicity purely on physical appearance." - I don't think this is quite the right definition. The way the term is usually used is a rationalization for assuming certain behaviors, especially criminal, are more likely based solely on race or ethnicity. - Yeah, what you have there is a clumsy definition of racism or racialization. Lemme try something. Theory of Practice Still tryin' to figure it all out. 01:49, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Is This a Fact?[edit]
Some otherwise legitimate criticism of excessive airport security (when coming from those on the right) has been marred by suggestions that the TSA should instead be actively profiling and subjecting those of Middle Eastern appearance for additional scrutiny. I am too new to delete, but I suggest a more experienced editor look at this. Their have been complaints that whites and old people have been scrutinized to NOT appear biased. - I don't know how fair it is to call it "legitimate". There was a pretty good discussion/debate between Sam Harris and a security expert on this a while ago, http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/to-profile-or-not-to-profile. Essentially: profiling is useful, but implementing a profiling system that would be useful would be too expensive (in time, money, and training). Harris says that anyone who appears Muslim (not necessarily by race, though race can be a component of it) should have additional scrutiny applied to them. This could be accomplished somewhat like a technique used in artificial intelligence for identifying good moves: as you discover more and more moves that are rated positively (in this case: are effective in finding terrorists), you do those moves more and more, but you continue to at random intervals try other moves an adjust your technique if they seem to work.
- On another side of the table, there's one thing that doesn't really get discussed that much: we know that people in various areas of enforcement already profile extensively (different amounts based on where in the country they are), but we don't know exactly how much TSA officials are already profiling. So, it could turn out we are not just already profiling, but we are over-profiling. I think we may want to be more neutral on this topic, as we don't really have proper justification to believe that we need to take proactive measurements to profile more at this point and time. --ShadowofLords (talk) 19:04, 12 July 2013 (UTC)
Quote[edit]
I feel like we should add a quote from Zootopia, considering how much it played a part in the movie, but I have a terrible memory for specifics from movies. Guess we'll have to wait 'til the DVD comes out. ℕoir LeSable (talk) 21:34, 29 March 2016 (UTC)
