Daily Joke Slogan[edit]

My idea was to replace the "Lair of the Cabal" thing with an odd daily joke slogan. If you hate the idea, revert :-) , just a thought.-αmεσ (!) 18:20, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

I wonder if we could make a template page like the bible verse one, but with several "included" slogans - and have them appear randomly? Like UC does with their stub template? We could use the discussion page at the new template to "approve" of various slogans so it wouldn't get ugly. Right now, I think I'm gonna go change it to Hot science, just for now. humanbe in 18:23, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

Sweet, I really like that idea! I had some more that I'd thought of. The ones I want would be vaguely conspiracy-theory-joke-oriented. I got the idea, though, from watching too much Futurama...

  1. The Latest Iteration of the Priory of Sion.
  2. Hot Science.
  3. Now With Less Hellfire!
  4. Harry Potter Spoiler: We Killed Voldemort.
  5. Why Not?
  6. This Site is Growing Rapidly!
  7. Run on MediaWiki by poorly paid illegal aliens

Excellent... Do I have to copy and paste and hack together the randomizing template myself? humanbe in 18:55, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

I believe so :-). I have NO IDEA how to do it. Not that that's shocking.-αmεσ (!) 18:57, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

OK, I'm on it. It helps that I noticed that "stub" on UC was randomized... got the source, gonna set it up with a few choices from the above list soon. I think I'll use their "end of teh internets" one as well, at a very low percentage like they do... I hope the mob likes this. humanbe in 19:03, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
I took a stab at it, using the {{Random subpage}} template stolen borrowed from Wikipedia, but that's giving me Unrecognised punctuation character "[" errors, and I can't find whatever "[" it's complaining about. --jtltalk 19:08, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Got it, I think. --jtltalk 19:14, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Okay, got it. That template depended on {{rand}} and {{mod}} templates, which also needed to be copied over. Okay, to add a motto now, you:
  • Look at the main page template to find the current 'end' value; right now that's 7
  • Add 1 to that value; that's your new motto number. If you did this right now, that would be '8'
  • Edit "Template:RationalWiki MainPage/Motto/8" (or whatever the right number is). Add your motto. Save this page.
  • Go back and change the 'end' value on the main page template to your new value, and save your change
  • Bask in the glory of your new motto. --jtltalk 19:18, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

<- That hurt to read, let alone try...! Can we install "choose"? humanbe in 19:29, 9 July 2007 (CDT) But you're right, it works. I'm gonna go copyedit the mottoes for itals and bolding now. If we can;t make "choose" work (much easier to edit and play with), I'll delete the template I made. humanbe in 19:31, 9 July 2007 (CDT)

You shouldn't need to edit the individual pages for that -- the italics are in the outer template, and the bold could be too if we wanted. --jtltalk 19:38, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
I removed them from the main, so each slogan appears as it is in its own page. Also messed them all up now. Anyway, we need 'choose'. Even if I could figure it out, I don't have back end privs - and I shouldn't! If "choose" worked, the growing rapidly slogan could flop between growing and shrinking... humanbe in 19:42, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Choose works now, so I switched over to your method. Now to add a motto, you edit Template:RationalWiki Slogan and follow the existing pattern. Much better -- glad you found that, human! --jtltalk 22:27, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
Wouldn;t we prefer that people discuss new slogans on thetemplate talk page? Other than that, ooh, so cool! humanbe in 22:36, 9 July 2007 (CDT)
