Slovakia is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe that borders Czechia in the northwest, Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east, and Austria in the west. The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava. It has been member of the European Union since 2004.
Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia in 1918–1993 (with an exception of the period 1939–1945) and become independent on the 1st January 1993 when Czechoslovakia split into Czechia and Slovakia.
The territory of Slovakia was settled by Slovaks probably in the 6th or 7th century. The territory between central highlands and the Morava river became a part of Great Moravia in the 9th century.
