Slovakia is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe[1] that borders Czechia in the northwest, Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east, and Austria in the west. The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava
. It has been member of the European Union since 2004.[2]
Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia in 1918–1993 (with an exception of the period 1939–1945) and become independent on the 1st January 1993 when Czechoslovakia split into Czechia and Slovakia.[3]

Slavic slettlement[edit]
The territory of Slovakia was settled by Slovaks probably in the 6th or 7th century. The territory between central highlands and the Morava river became a part of Great Moravia in the 9th century.[4]
