User:Purebread/sandbox/Marcus Aurleus Antoninus
The nature of him[edit]
Antoninus has recorded in his first book the names of his teachers, and the obligations which he owed to each of them. The way in which he speaks of what he learned from them might seem to savor of vanity or self-praise, but only if we look carelessly at the way in which he has expressed himself. Antoninus means, here, to commemorate the strength and merit of of his teachers, and what they taught him.[1]
A rare event in history of human civilization, it is said …[edit]
Such a body of teachers distinguished by their personal achievements, and their grasp of unbrutal character, will hardly be collected again; and as to the pupil, they say "we have not had one like him since."
The times[edit]
In the wretched times from the death of Augustus [2] to the murder of the vicious egomaniac Domitian [3], there was nothing but the Stoic philosophy of clarity and restraint which could console and support the followers of an old way, under an abjectly corrupt imperial tyranny.
