Not to be confused with Naomi Klein.
Wolf in sheep's clothing
Naomi Wolf’s long, ludicrous career has followed a simple formula. She audits herself for some speck of dissatisfaction, arrives at an epiphany — one that might contravene any number of natural laws — and then extrapolates a set of rules and recommendations for all women. Predictable controversy ensues; grouchy reviews and much attention.
—Parul Sehgal in a review of Wolf's book Outrages.[1]

Naomi Wolf (1962–) is an American author, journalist, former Democratic political consultant, conspiracy theorist and founder of Daily Clout.

Following the publication of her first book in 1990, The Beauty Myth, Wolf inspired and became a spokeswoman for the third wave of feminism.

The conspiracy theory tipping point for Wolf seems to be around 2014.

Vagina: A New Biography[edit]

Outrages[edit]

Outrages: Sex, Censorship, and the Criminalization of Love was published in 2019 and is a great case study in how to misinterpert historical sources. The premise of Outrages is good: Wolf discusses repression of homosexuality in Victorian England in relation with society's attitudes towards divorce and prostitution. To support this thesis Wolf looked through historical court records and noted how many court cases recorded the verdict "death recorded" for sodomy cases, which she interperted as execution. In reality "death recorded" is the opposite of an execution: the judge recommended a pardon from the death sentence.[2]

Wolf later released a corrected version in 2021, which also was wrong. This time Wolf confused child abuse cases with gay persecution.[3] The book has been used in university courses as a case study on how not to do historical research.[4]

Hot takes[edit]

5G[edit]

It was amazing to go to Belfast, which does not yet have 5G, and feel the earth, sky air, human experience, feel the way it did in the 1970s. Calm, still, peaceful, restful, natural
—Naomi Wolf,[5] visiting a city with 5G coverage.[6][notes 1]

COVID-19 and Five Freedoms[edit]

Notes[edit]

  1. Wolf visited Belfast in July, but 5G was turned on in May.
